Towson football will try to pull off upset against No. 7 Richmond

Towson (1-2) at Richmond (3-1)

When: Saturday, 3:30

Site: Robins Stadium, Richmond, Va.

TV: Comcast Sportsnet

Radio: HFS 104.9

Series: Richmond leads, 5-4

What’s at stake: After a disappointing start, Towson has had a week off to rally the troops to face dangerous Richmond, ranked No. 7 in the FCS poll. If the Spiders need incentive it’s that, despite a 3-1 mark, they have yet to win a game in the Colonial Athletic Association. Towson is still without quarterback Morgan Mahalak (shoulder injury) and will lean heavily on his replacement, Ellis Kundson, whose erratic play in the Tigers’ last game, a 40-21 loss at Villanova, earned him a “C” grade from coach Rob Ambrose.

Key matchup: Towson has changed some bodies on an abysmally porous defense, but will it matter against a quarterback who’s averaging over 300 yards passing? Last week, the Spiders’ Kyle Lauletta threw for four touchdowns in a 38-31 win over No. 21 Colgate. Towson has surrendered nine TDs by air, and 124 points, in three games.

Player to watch: Both teams boast standout runners: Towson senior Darius Victor, the school’s No. 3 all-time rusher (3,210 yards), and Richmond’s Xavier Goodall, a freshman who torched Colgate for 127 yards to earn honors as CAA Rookie of the Week.
