Towson CB Jordan Love getting closer to returning

After sitting out Towson's season-opening 33-18 victory over Connecticut on Aug. 29 because of a foot injury, cornerback Jordan Love played briefly in the team's 49-7 thrashing of Holy Cross on Saturday.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior made one tackle, but it seems like sophomore Donnell Lewis will make his third consective start when Delaware State visits Johnny Unitas Stadium this Saturday for the No. 4 Tigers' home opener.

"He will be playing," coach Rob Ambrose said of Love. "His role will be increased. We're still in the evaluative process. We're getting to the point where he should be up and running completely, but I'd say that another good week of feeling this out and another good week of practice and I can rest assured in saying that he will be in the starting lineup barring any setbacks."

Towson appears to have settled on a kicker. Fifth-year senior Drew Evangelista converted all seven extra-point attempts last Saturday, but he kept the door open for senior D.J. Soven when he missed a 33-yard field wide right.

Ambrose said both Evangelista and Soven – who took all eight kickoffs against the Crusaders – are vying for the starting kicking duties.

"Those two are competing weekly, and to be honest, the fact they're competing is good for both of them," Ambrose said. "It's not like Drew's field-goal miss this past Saturday was a big miss. It was a slight miss, but it's still a miss. Allowing two good kids to work against each other during the week, I think it's going to pay dividends. The problem was, Drew was hurt during summer camp. He pulled a quad. So D.J. was flying solo. And competition breeds success. So while the world doesn't get to see them get better, they're getting better. At least they are in practice. We'll see how they put it together on the field."
