When Andrew King finished his final year at Morgan State last fall, the wide receiver caught 27.3 percent of the team's passes, had 25.7 percent of the receiving yards and scored 33.3 percent of the touchdown catches and led the offense in each of those categories.Replacing that production could be difficult, but Ricky Fisk is up for the challenge."I looked up to him when I was a junior and he was a senior," Fisk recalled Friday from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football media day in Norfolk, Va. "When we were in practice, he would tell me how to do this and how to do that. He was quiet to everybody else on the team, but he wasn't quiet to me."We would talk about how things were supposed to be done. So I do feel like now that he's gone, I'm the next one. I was right under him, and he taught me things, and I feel like I can teach the younger guys things. There's no pressure, but I do feel like I have to step up."The 6-foot, 180-pound senior ranked second on the Bears in receptions (29) and yards (323), but has loftier goals. He wants to lead the MEAC in receiving and kick return yards and become an All-American. Fisk also wants to catch a touchdown pass, which he has not done since Nov. 22, 2014 in a 69-7 shellacking of Delaware State."That's a big thing, I need to get in the box more," he said of scoring. "I've been working on it all summer, and I need to get the ball more when we get close, and I need to make more plays and make more people miss when I get the ball."Fisk, who started every game last season, leads a receiving corps that includes sophomore Brian Gentry (14 catches for 185 yards and one touchdown in nine starts), redshirt sophomore Landen Malbrough (16 for 231 and one score), senior Ladarious Spearman (6 for 82), redshirt junior Amonta Poteat (5 for 45) and senior Thomas Martin (missed 2015 because of academic issues). That's why interim head coach Fred Farrier is not putting the onus solely on Fisk."We've got six guys at the wide receiver position who are pretty dynamic," Farrier said. "They all bring different skill sets to the table, and hopefully for us, once we get our quarterback up to speed, a defense will have to try to figure out who they want to take away, and if the opportunity is taken away from one young man, somebody else will have to find a way to step up and make some plays. We feel like we have a few weapons who will give us some options."
