Men's lacrosse: Penn State holds on to edge No. 12 Hofstra, 8-7

Penn State took the lead in the first minute and never trailed, and an own goal by visiting No. 12 Hofstra led to an 8-7 upset win for the Nittany Lions on Saturday.

The victory gave Penn State a winning record in its last regular season in the Colonial Athletic Association before a move to the Big Ten. It also made the Nittany Lions (7-6, 3-2), who cannot play in the CAA tournament, eligible for an at-large NCAA tournament bid.

Attackman Mike Sutton scored the first two goals of the game for Penn State, and attackman Shane Sturgis scored three times in two minutes to help build a 6-4 halftime lead over the Pride (10-4, 4-1). The Nittany Lions did not score in the last 27:25, but an own goal on a pass to Hofstra goalkeeper Chris Selva gave Penn State an 8-5 lead with 12:10 left in the third quarter, allowing the Nittany Lions to withstand two late Pride goals.

No. 3 Denver 17, Marquette 9: The host Pioneers (12-2, 6-0) outscored the Golden Eagles (6-9, 4-2) by 10-1 over the second and third quarters, and Denver and Marquette finished first and second, respectively, in the Big East Conference regular season.

Attacker Jack Bobzien scored four times for the Pioneers, and midfielder Kyle Whitlow led the Golden Eagles with three goals.

No. 8 Virginia 13, No. 7 North Carolina 11: The Tar Heels (10-4, 2-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 8-4 in the second half, but the Cavaliers (10-5, 2-4) came back for the win at the ACC Showcase in Chester, Pa.

Attackman Mark Cockerton led Virginia with four goals and three assists.

No. 13 Cornell 12, Princeton 10: The Big Red took the lead for good after a 6-4 third quarter, tying Harvard for the Ivy League regular-season title with its win over the Tigers (7-6, 2-4) at Bethpage High School in Bethpage, N.Y.

Big Red freshman goalkeeper Christian Knight (Boys' Latin) made a career-high 16 saves, and Cornell (11-3, 5-1) had a 41-36 shooting advantage.

No. 15 Harvard 11, No. 14 Yale 10: The Crimson won a share of the Ivy League regular-season title for the first time since 1990 after withstanding a third-quarter rally by the host Bulldogs. Harvard will also host the league tournament.

No. 16 Albany 21, Binghamton 7: The host Great Danes (9-5, 5-0 America East) led 13-2 at the half and maintained a double-digit advantage for the rest of the game, remaining undefeated in the conference by dealing Binghamton (7-7, 4-1) its first conference defeat.

No. 18 Saint Joseph's 15, Hobart 8: Attackmen Michael Rastivo and Ryan McGee each had a hat trick to lead the Hawks (11-3, 6-0) past the host Statesmen (4-9, 3-3), clinching the Northeast Conference regular-season title.

No. 19 Bryant 15, Wagner 7: After a tied first quarter, the host Bulldogs broke open the game with a six-goal run to lead 10-4 at halftime.

Attackmen Tucker James, Shane Morrell and Dan Sipperly each scored three goals for Bryant (12-4, 5-1 NEC), as did midfielder Paul DeVita for the Seahawks (2-11, 0-6). The Bulldogs had a 53-24 shooting advantage.

State

UMBC 17, Vermont 14: The visiting Retrievers (7-6, 3-2 America East) trailed 5-1 after the first 15 minutes, but went on a 9-0 run in the second quarter and held on to beat the Catamounts.

Attackman Nate Lewnes (St. Mary's) had seven goals for UMBC.

Sacred Heart 14, Mount St. Mary's 10: The visiting Mountaineers narrowed a 7-2 halftime deficit to 10-7 at the end of the third quarter, but the Mount (1-15, 1-5 NEC) ultimately fell to the Pioneers (6-8, 4-2).

Stevenson 20, Lycoming 7: The Mustangs cruised past the host Warriors to finish first in the Commonwealth Conference.

Stevenson midfielder Chris Dashiell led all players with five goals. The Mustangs (15-2, 8-0) went on a nine-goal run starting in the second quarter to lead Lycoming (6-9, 4-4) by 17-3 early in the final period.

Gettysburg 16, McDaniel 15: After a close first half, the host Green Terror (6-9, 5-3 Centennial Conference) scored five straight goals for a 15-10 lead with 14:48 to play, but the Bullets (9-6, 5-3) retaliated with a six-goal run.

Salisbury 12, Frostburg State 6: The Sea Gulls beat the visiting Bobcats in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinals.

Salisbury (17-1, 6-1) never trailed, though Frostburg State (13-5, 4-3) pulled within 8-6 before Salisbury ran away.

Albright 11, Hood 6: The Blazers (4-12, 1-7 Commonwealth) scored first, but the visiting Lions (10-5, 6-2) led for the last 51:38 and pulled away with a four-goal run in the fourth quarter.
