Previewing the week ahead for Maryland men's lacrosse teams

No. 1 Loyola (12-1)

Coming up: Idle


Comment: The Greyhounds will host the Patriot League tournament semifinals and final but won't know their opponent until after Tuesday's quarterfinals. Senior attackman Justin Ward's 39 assists eclipsed Sean Heffernan's single-season school record of 38.

No. 5 Johns Hopkins (8-3)


Coming up: At Navy, Friday, 7 p.m.; Vs. Villanova, Wednesday, 7 p.m., Homewood Field

Comment: The Blue Jays are 58-27-1 against the Midshipmen and 6-0 against the Wildcats. Junior attackman Wells Stanwick's 36 assists are the most by a Johns Hopkins player since Dan Denihan's 40 in 2000.

No. 6 Maryland (9-2)

Coming up: At No. 9 Notre Dame, Saturday, 12 p.m.

Comment: The Terps are 4-1 against the Fighting Irish. With three assists on Saturday, senior midfielder Mike Chanenchuk became the program's 47th player to amass 100 career points, but his 23-game streak with a goal ended.

Mount St. Mary's (0-14)

Coming up: Vs. Wagner, Saturday, 12 p.m., Waldron Family Stadium

Comment: The Mountaineers could get their first win of the season; they have beaten the Seahawks in all 13 of their meetings. Senior midfielder Kyle McDonough posted a career-high four assists Saturday against Bryant.


Navy (4-7)

Coming up: Vs. No. 5 Johns Hopkins, Friday, 7 p.m.; at Lehigh, Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Comment: The Midshipmen have split the last four games with the Blue Jays. Freshman Brady Dove's 135 faceoff wins helped him pass William Wallace for fifth place on the program's single-season list.

Towson (8-4)

Coming up: Vs. No. 19 Drexel, Saturday, 7 p.m., Johnny Unitas Stadium; Vs. No. 10 Pennsylvania, Tuesday, 7 p.m., Johnny Unitas Stadium

Comment: The Tigers have beaten the Dragons in 38 of 45 contests, but Drexel has won three of the last four meetings. Sophomore defenseman Nick Gorman ranks second on the team in both ground balls (31) and caused turnovers (nine).


UMBC (6-5)

Coming up: Vs. No. 18 Albany, Saturday, 3:30 p.m., UMBC Stadium

Comment: The Retrievers are 10-7 in this series, but the Great Danes have won the last three games. Senior midfielder Ryan Johnston tied a school record shared by six others when he scored three man-up goals Saturday against Hartford.
