Maryland picked to finish second in ACC

NCAA runner-up Maryland was picked in the Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse preseason poll to finish second behind national champion North Carolina. The Tar Heels received four first-place votes and 60 points in the balloting among the ACC's eight head coaches. Maryland, the reigning ACC champion, received two first-place votes and 54 points. ACC newcomer and 2013 final four participant Syracuse was third with two first-place votes and 53 points. Duke (34) was picked to finish fourth, Virginia (29) fifth, Notre Dame (27) sixth, Boston College (23) seventh and Virginia Tech (8) eighth. North Carolina, Maryland and Syracuse also are ranked 1-2-3 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. The preseason All-ACC team includes Maryland redshirt junior attacker Brooke Griffin (South River), sophomore midfielder Taylor Cummings (McDonogh) and junior midfielder Kelly McPartland; Duke senior defender Taylor Virden (McDonogh); and Boston College junior attacker Covie Stanwick (Notre Dame Prep).

CAA: Two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Towson was picked to finish atop the conference standings again in 2014, according to a vote by the league's head coaches. The Tigers earned four first-place votes for a total of 24 points. James Madison is second with 21 points and one first-place vote. Hofstra received a total of 17 points, including one first-place vote. Delaware was picked to finish fourth, while Drexel and William & Mary rounded out the predicted order of finish.

Coaching extension: Northwestern has given Kelly Amonte Hiller (Maryland), whose team has won seven NCAA championships in the past nine seasons, a contract extension to keep her at the school through the 2021 season.

Rutgers officially hires Friedgen as offensive coordinator

Rutgers officially announced the hiring of former Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen as offensive coordinator. Friedgen was head coach at Maryland from 2001 to 2010 and previously was offensive coordinator for both a national college champion (Georgia Tech in 1990) and a Super Bowl team (the San Diego Chargers in 1994). The Scarlet Knights will play at Maryland on Nov. 29. "We could not have found a better coach or person to lead our offense than Ralph," Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood said. "His track record of success both in college and the NFL is second to none on the offensive side of the ball. He will be a tremendous addition to our Rutgers football family."

More football: Weeks after finishing the 2013 season as NCAA Football Championship Subdivision runner-up, Towson will hold a football national signing day celebration tonight at 6 at the Charles Village Pub on 19 W. Pennsylvania Ave. during which coach Rob Ambrose and his staff will announce their 2014 recruiting class. The coaches will talk about each new player and a highlight video will be shown.

Baseball: UMBC was picked to finish sixth in the 2014 America East preseason poll of coaches. 2013 conference tournament champion Binghamton and 2012 winner Stony Brook tied for the top spot.

Men's basketball: Bowie State's Darrell Brooks was named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Week.

Women's basketball: No. 10 Maryland will celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day at Thursday's 7 p.m. home game against Pittsburgh. Girls from kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to "Train with the Terps" beginning with check-in at 5:15 p.m. Members of Maryland's women's teams will be on hand to participate in various sports from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. To register, go to umterps.com.

Swimming and diving: Loyola Maryland senior Michael Brown (Calvert Hall) was been named the Patriot League Male Diver of the Week for a fifth time this season. ... Johns Hopkins senior Kylie Ternes was named Bluegrass Mountain Conference women's Swimmer of the Week. ... St.Mary's senior Thor Petersen was named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week.

Indoor track and field: UMBC junior Mercedes Jackson and senior Andrew Smith were named America East Track Athletes of the Week.

Administration: Doug Reaves, who attended Northern and graduated in 1990 from Towson State, where he was an offensive lineman on the football team, has been named general manager of Towson Sports Properties. He will head up the sales and sponsorship efforts for the Tigers athletics program.

Ravens try out CFL linebacker Henoc Muamba

The Ravens tried out Canadian Football League middle linebacker Henoc Muamba on Monday, according to an NFL source. He wasn't immediately signed to a contract. Muamba, 24, is a 6-foot, 230-pound player who was drafted first overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2011 CFL draft out of St. Francis Xavier University in Canada. He was voted the Blue Bombers' Most Outstanding Player, Most Outstanding Defensive Player and Most Outstanding Canadian this past season.

Indoor soccer: Blast goalkeeper William Vanzela and midfielder Max Ferdinand were named to the Major Indoor Soccer League Team of the Week. Vanzela, last week's Player of the Week, recorded 31 saves in a 12-10 win at Syracuse, and Ferdinand provided the game-winning goal and added an assist. The Blast's Mike Looking-land and Marco Mangione received honorable mention.

Varsity boys basketball: The Baltimore Catholic League tournament, which was originally scheduled to take place at Stevenson, has been moved to UMBC. The quarterfinals will be Feb. 21 (3:30 p.m.-8:45 p.m.) with the semifinals Feb. 23 (1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and the championship game Feb. 24 (7 p.m.).
