College football scouting report: Bethune-Cookman at Morgan State

Bethune-Cookman (6-2, 5-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) at Morgan State (3-5, 2-3 MEAC)

When: Saturday, 1 p.m.

Site: Hughes Stadium

Radio: 88.9 FM

Series: Bethune-Cookman leads 18-8

What’s at Stake: Near the bottom of the MEAC standings with only two games remaining, Morgan is playing for pride and the upperclassman on senior day. Last week, the Bears suffered their third consecutive heartbreaking loss, when they were stopped on a fourth down late in the game. But breaking the three-game losing streak against the top team in the conference might take away some of the sting from those losses. But the Wildcats have steamrolled their last two opponents by a combined score of 90-20 and will be looking to improve their playoff position with another win.

Key Matchup: The Bears’ chances of winning will come down to how well their defense can step up. Morgan ranks 10th in the MEAC in total defense (440.8 ypg) and will face the No. 1 offense in the conference. The Wildcats average 380.5 yards a game, with 235.1 of those coming on the ground. The Bears’ defense needs to slow down the high-octane offense, even just a little, to give its offense a chance.

Player to Watch: Morgan senior running back Travis Davidson will look to go out with a bang in his final home game. The conference’s leading rusher (805 yards, 11 TDs) goes up against a Bethune-Cookman team that gives up 142.4 yards per game. If the Wildcats allow the player nicknamed “Juice” to wreak havoc with his speed, it could get interesting.
