The U.S. national team got back to its winning ways against Germany with a 22-4 victory in the Federation of International Lacrosse world championships at the University of Manchester in England. Attackman Brendan Mundorf (UMBC) scored five goals and added three assists to pace 10 different scorers for the U.S., which was coming off a 10-9 loss to reigning world champion Canada. Ryan Powell, Drew Westervelt (UMBC) and Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins) added three goals apiece. Faceoff specialist Alex Smith, a midfielder with the Chesapeake Bayhawks, was 12-for-18. Germany closed within 9-3 in the second quarter, but the U.S. blanked the Germans for the next 25-plus minutes and went on a 13-0 run. Germany was playing in place of the Iroquois Nationals, whose absence from the world championships because of a passport dispute created an opening in the Blue Division, the FIL's top flight. "For us, it's more just to get on the field, play and shake that off," U.S. defenseman Ryan McClay said. "If you have to sit and stew on that, it eats you up. Fact is, you learn from it and move on." The U.S. improved to 2-1 and resumes pool play Monday against England.
