Cornell's Tambroni set to become Penn State lacrosse coach

Jeff Tambroni will be the next men's lacrosse coach at Penn State, the university announced Thursday night. Tambroni led Cornell to the final four three of the past four seasons, including a title-game appearance in 2009, when it lost to Syracuse in overtime. Tambroni, who had reportedly been in the running for the Maryland vacancy filled Tuesday by Harvard's John Tillman, replaces longtime coach Glenn Thiel. Thiel led the Nittany Lions for 33 years, twice making the NCAA tournament but never advancing past the first round.

TENNIS: Salisbury doubles pairing of seniors Scott Burtzlaff (River Hill) and Evan Thomas was named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III All-America team. The pair advanced to the NCAA Division III championships and finished the year ranked ninth in the nation.

GOLF: Incoming Maryland freshman Sean Bosdosh of Clarksburg won the 89th Maryland Amateur title this weekend at Bethesda's Congressional Country Club. Bosdosh, 18, is the youngest champion in Amateur history.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Kristen Weiss has been named Maryland's volunteer assistant coach. Weiss, who attended Virginia, spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Clemson.

VOLLEYBALL: Stevenson senior Marisa Bender won the Capital Athletic Conference Unsung Hero Award. Bender is the first Stevenson student-athlete to be selected in the award's history.

WRESTLING: The funeral service for former Navy coach Ed Peery, who died Tuesday, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Naval Academy Chapel.

The Chesapeake Bayhawks have traded midfielder Jordan Levine to the Chicago Machine for attackman Chazz Woodson, the Major League Lacrosse teams announced. "Woodson is a dynamic player who can break defenders down with his speed and quickness. We are very excited to see him in a Bayhawks uniform," Bayhawks general manager Spencer Ford said. Woodson, who attended Brown, was selected 20th overall in the 2005 draft by Long Island and has since played for Boston, Los Angeles and Chicago. Levine scored one goal and had three assists in four games with the Bayhawks.

PRO SOCCER: Crystal Palace Baltimore will play its next home game, a July 4 USSF D-2 Pro League match against the Minnesota Stars, at Calvert Hall. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

WOMEN'S PRO FOOTBALL: Tarsha Fain, an offensive lineman from Baltimore, and Okiima Pickett, a running back from Glen Burnie, have been selected to play for USA Football's women's national team.
