Mount St. Mary's hires ex-UMBC assistant as basketball coach

Mount St. Mary's has hired Rob Burke as its new men's basketball coach, the university announced today.

Burke comes to Emmitsburg from Washington, where he spent the past season as an assistant at American. Before coaching the Eagles, Burke was an assistant coach at Georgetown for five seasons, including during the Hoyas' run to the 2007 Final Four.

A native Marylander, Burke grew up in Silver Spring and starred at Gonzaga College High School in Washington before moving onto Haverford College, where he was an MVP and team captain. His first college coaching job came at UMBC, where he served as an assistant from 1984-88. He later coached at Princeton, Siena and Loyola Marymount.

Mount St. Mary's will formally introduce Burke at a news conference Monday at 2 p.m. Burke will be the 20th head coach in Mountaineers history. He replaces Milan Brown, who took the Holy Cross job last month.
