Collin Finnerty had a career-high five goals and the Loyola men's lacrosse team used a pair of 4-0 runs in the second half to beat Bellarmine, 14-8, on Wednesday in Louisville, Ky.
The 10th-ranked Greyhounds (3-0, 2-0 Eastern College Athletic Conference) outscored the Knights 11-4 in the second half.
After trailing 5-4 at halftime, Loyola scored less than three minutes into the second half on a goal by Finnerty, starting the run. Patrick Fanshaw and Eric Lusby added goals for the Greyhounds during the next two minutes, and Finnerty scored again with 10:13 remaining to cap the stretch with Loyola on top 7-4.
Bellarmine (3-2, 0-1) rallied to within a goal as Sean Doyle scored with 5:04 to play in the third, but Finnerty scored his fifth goal with time expiring in the quarter to give the Greyhounds an 8-6 advantage starting the fourth.
Finnerty's previous career high had been four goals.
Greyhounds leading scorer and senior attackman Cooper MacDonnell did not make the trip after suffering a shoulder injury in the team's 11-5 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday.
WomenDenver 13, No. 9 Loyola 12, OT: After the Greyhounds trailed by four with 8:05 left in regulation, Kelly Quinlan scored the tying goal on a free-position shot with 35 seconds left, but the Pioneers (5-2) scored twice in overtime to upset Loyola (2-2) in Denver.
Denver's Kara Secora scored first with five seconds left in the first overtime.
Loyola tied it midway through the second overtime on Caroline Hager's second goal.
Secora netted the game-winner less than a minute later.
No. 17 Towson 15, UMBC 7: Jess Dunn (Fallston) and Jacie Kendall each had a hat trick to power the host Tigers (1-0) past the Retrievers (2-3).
Dunn gave Towson a 2-0 lead over a three-minute span before the Tigers stretched the advantage to 4-0 with 16:06 left in the first half. UMBC got four goals from Ashley Stodter and two from Alicia Krause (Mount Hebron), but the Tigers went on an 8-1 run over 14-minute span for a 12-3 lead with 24:03 left in the game.
Holy Cross 12, Mount St. Mary's 10: The Crusaders (1-3) scored five of the final eight goals to beat the Mount (1-3) in Denver.
Esther Rufolo (Chapelgate Christian Academy) paced Mount St. Mary's with her second hat trick of the season along with one assist and seven draw controls. Ashley Johnson added two goals. Kat Sutton led Holy Cross with four goals.
Johns Hopkins 14, Stony Brook 7: The Blue Jays (2-2) used a 7-0 run midway through the second half to pull away from the visiting Seawolves (1-4).
Paige Ibello (Maryvale Prep) and Rachel Ballatori combined for seven goals.
