State basketball roundup (Feb. 9): Vado Morse helps lift Mount St. Mary's men out of four-game skid

Vado Morse had 23 points as Mount St. Mary's narrowly beat host Sacred Heart 76-73 on Saturday in men's basketball. Jalen Gibbs added 21 points for the Mountaineers. Gibbs also had six rebounds for the Mountaineers.

Malik Jefferson had 13 points for Mount St. Mary's (6-19, 3-9 Northeast Conference ), which snapped its four-game losing streak.

Sean Hoehn had 24 points for the Pioneers (11-14, 7-5). Koreem Ozier added 18 points. Kinnon LaRose had 15 points.

The Mountaineers evened the season series against the Pioneers. Sacred Heart defeated Mount St. Mary's 87-79 on Jan. 31.

Colgate 75, Loyola Maryland 72: Will Rayman and Rapolas Ivanauskas scored 24 points apiece as the host Raiders (15-10, 7-5 Patriot League ) edged the Greyhounds (8-17, 4-8).

Andrew Kostecka had 25 points for Loyola, which has now lost four consecutive games. Chuck Champion added 18 points.

Towson 66, James Madison 59: Brian Fobbs had 29 points to lead the host Tigers (9-16, 5-7 Colonial Athletic Association) past the Dukes (10-15, 3-9).

Nakye Sanders had eight rebounds for Towson. Dennis Tunstall added seven rebounds. S.C. State 85, Morgan State 81: Stanley Davis scored 20 points, but the Bears (8-15, 3-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference ) fell to the host Bulldogs (5-20, 3-6).

Savannah State 71, Coppin State 62: Kent Auslander scored 20 points, but the visiting Eagles (5-20, 5-5 MEAC) couldn't overcome a 42-25 first-half deficit to the Tigers (8-15, 5-4).

N.C. Central 78, UMES 53: Ryan Andino had 13 points, but the Hawks (4-22, 2-9 MEAC) lost to the host Eagles (11-13, 6-4).

Lehigh 83, Navy 57: The loss ended a two-game winning streak by the visiting Mids (8-15, 5-7 Patriot League). The Mountain Hawks improved to 16-7, 9-3.

Women

Morgan State 63, S.C. State 61: Adre'onia Coleman (St. Frances) made two free throws with 17 seconds left for a 63-58 lead and the Bears (8-16, 6-4 MEAC) hung on to beat the host Bulldogs (11-12, 4-5) Coleman and Kayla Horn each scored 13 points and Ashia McCalla had 12 points for Morgan State.

UMES 69, N.C. Central 61: Tied at 30 in the first half, the Hawks (14-10, 10-1 MEAC) used a second-half surge to beat the host Eagles (6-17, 3-7). Ra'Jean Martin and Dominique Walker (Harford CC) each finished with 16 points for UMES.

Navy 67, Colgate 52: Freshman Jennifer Coleman scored 16 points and the host Mids (9-12, 4-7 Patriot) broke a five-game losing streak by beating the Raiders (9-12, 5-6).

Savannah State 68, Coppin State 57: Brooke Fields (Institute of Notre Dame) scored a season-best 26 points for a third time in the loss for the visiting Eagles (2-20, 2-8 MEAC) to the Tigers (5-13, 3-6).

Holy Cross 58, Loyola Maryland 48: Stephanie Karcz had 18 points, but the host Greyhounds (3-18, 2-8 Patriot) lost to the Crusaders (12-9, 4-6).

Maine 58, UMBC 45: The host Retrievers (8-15, 1-9 America East ) held the Black Bears (17-7, 10-1) to their second lowest scoring game in league play, but committed 29 turnovers.

Tey'Jah Oliver and Janee'a Summers each scored 10 points for UMBC.

Sacred Heart 76, Mount St. Mary's 41: The host Pioneers (11-10, 7-3 Northeast Conference) opened with a 24-6 run and cruised past the Mount (10-11, 4-6). Michaela Harrison had 14 points for Mount St. Mary's.
