State basketball roundup (Jan. 30): Joe Sherburne lifts UMBC to 5th straight win

Senior Joe Sherburne had 17 points and 11 rebounds — his fourth career double double — to help host the UMBC men's basketball team beat Stony Brook 57-49 on Wednesday night and extend its win streak to five games.

R.J. Eytle-Rock and Arkel Lamar added 10 points apiece for UMBC (14-9, 6-2 America East Conference ). The Retrievers moved into second in the conference standings, a half-game behind Vermont and a half-game ahead of Stony Brook. UMBC handed the Catamounts their lone conference loss, 74-61, last Saturday.

Ricky Council and Jose Placer hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Retrievers the lead for good and spark an 18-4 run that made it 26-15 when Sherburne hit a 3 with 3:40 left in the first half. Stony Brook scored the next five points to make it 26-20 at the break but got no closer. Akwasi Yeboah had 14 points and 12 points for the Seawolves (17-2, 5-2). Stony Brook, which shot just 30.9 percent (17 of 55), was held below 50 points for the first time since a 57-48 loss to Vermont on Feb. 7, 2015.

American 74, Loyola Maryland 68: Andrew Kostecka had a game-high 22 points, but the host Greyhounds (8-14, 4-5 Patriot League ) fell to the Eagles (11-9, 5-4). The teams played to a 33-all first-half score before American outscored Loyola, 41-35, in the second half. The Greyhounds drew within 66-63 with a 1:58 left to play.

Bucknell 69, Navy 57: George Kiernan had 13 points and Evan Wieck had 12 points, but a second-half rally fell short for the visiting Mids (6-13, 3-5). Kimbal Mackenzie (John Carroll) and Avi Toomer each scored 14 points for the Bison (13-8, 7-2).

Navy has lost four straight.

Women

Lehigh 51, Loyola Maryland 42: Isabella Therien (21 points) pulled the visiting Greyhounds (2-18, 1-8 Patriot) within one, but the Mountain Hawks (14-6, 6-3) used a 10-0 run to stretch their lead to 51-40 with 1:21 to play.

Loyola, which has lost three straight, hosts Army West Point at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Bucknell 77, Navy 43: The visiting Bison (17-4, 8-1 Patriot) used tough defense to limit the Mids (8-11, 3-6) to eight points in the second and third quarters and nine points in the fourth quarter. Jennifer Coleman had 12 points and Kolbi Green (McDonogh) had 11 points for Navy. The loss was the fourth straight for the Mids.

Stony Brook 57, UMBC 44: Janee'a Summers had her fourth double double (15 points, 11 rebounds), but the visiting Retrievers (8-13, 1-7 America East) fell to the Seawolves (16-5, 5-3).

UMBC struggled from the floor, making 14 shots in the loss.
