One of two woman accusing Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of sexual assault says she was raped by a Duke basketball player in 1999.
Lawyers for Meredith Watson said in a statement that the alleged attack took place during her sophomore year at the North Carolina school.
"She went to the Dean, who provided no help and discouraged her from pursuing the claim further," read the statement. "Ms. Watson also told friends, including Justin Fairfax."
The alleged sexual assault took place in 1999, a source told USA Today. Watson said she was sexually assaulted by Fairfax when both were students at Duke the following year.
The basketball player accused by Watson has not been identified. Fairfax has denied both allegations against him.
Longtime Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters on Saturday that he found out about the sexual assault claim the previous night.
"Something like that is serious,” Krzyzewski said. “Our school looks at it this way. We will do whatever we can to answer whatever questions are posed to us."
Duke athletics director Kevin White said in a statement on Saturday that the university learned about the allegations the night before "when they were reported by the media."
