New UMBC Event Center to open for Feb. 3 men's basketball game vs. Vermont

The UMBC men’s basketball team’s showdown with America East Conference favorite Vermont will open the university’s new $85 million, 6,000-seat Event Center next week.

The school announced Wednesday that the Feb. 3 game would be the first event in the 172,000-square-foot facility, construction of which began in 2016.

“The completion of the Event Center marks an important milestone in UMBC’s evolution,” UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski said in a statement. “This venue will provide our athletic teams with an exceptional home base while also enabling us to host more events focused on the arts, culture and the life of the mind.”

The Retrievers (14-8, 5-2), who host Maine on Saturday in the Retriever Activities Center, are 10-0 at home this season. Vermont is 7-0 in league play and is the favorite to repeat as America East champion.

The Event Center will allow UMBC to host commencement ceremonies on its Catonsville campus. The school’s women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams also will play their home games there.
