State basketball roundup (Jan. 27): Lyles scores 34 as UMBC men win RAC finale

Jairus Lyles scored seven 3-pointers for 34 points and host UMBC defeated Maine, 86-74, Saturday and closed out the RAC Arena on a high note, winning 11 straight at home.

The Retrievers (15-8, 6-2 America East) shot nearly 60 percent in the second half as they went into halftime trailing by a point but had built a 22-point lead midway through the second half, 69-47.

UMBC forced 24 turnovers, turning the miscues into 31 points. The Retrievers, ranked in the top six nationally for total 3-pointers and 3-pointers made, finished 11 of 26 from behind the arc.

Max Curran scored 12 points for UMBC (15-8, 6-2 America East), Joe Sherburne added 11, K.J.Maura 10 points with nine assists and five steals. Daniel Akin pulled down 10 rebounds to go with nine points.

Maine's Isaiah White (Harford CC) scored a career-high 22 points with seven rebounds to lead the Black Bears (5-18, 2-6).

Loyola Maryland 79, Army West Point 68: Andre Walker scored 20 points and a go-ahead layup late and the host Greyhounds (7-14, 5-5 Patriot League) overcame a slow start to beat the Black Knights (12-9, 9-5).

Andrew Kostecka scored 18 points with four steals and Isaiah Hart added 15 points for Loyola. which shot 50.9 percent from the floor and trailed 41-32 at halftime.

Navy 77, Lehigh 75: Shawn Anderson finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals to help the Mids (14-9, 5-5 Patriot League) hold off the host Mountain Hawks (9-13, 3-7).

Mount St. Mary's 86, St. Francis (N.Y.) 72: Junior Robinson had a game-high 27 points to lead the visiting Mount (11-11, 5-4 Northeast Conference) past the Terriers (9-13, 4-5).

Coppin State 73, South Carolina State 65: The host Eagles (3-19, 3-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) outscored the Bulldogs (7-15, 3-4), 49-27, in the second half to win.

Lamar Morgan had a game-high 28 points and Karonn Davis had 21 points for Coppin.

Elon 83, Towson 76: Brian Dawkins and Dmitri Thompson scored 20 points apiece to power the visiting Phoenix (13-10, 5-5 Colonial Athletic Association) past the Tigers (15-8, 5-5).

Elon picked up its first road win over Towson in four tries. Zane Martin scored 30 of his 32 points in the second half for the Tigers.

Howard 85, UMES 75: RJ Cole scored 28 points, Charles Williams scored 19 and the visiting Bison (6-17, 3-4 MEAC) outscored the Hawks (5-18, 1-7) 20-10 down the stretch to win.

Cole's jumper gave Howard a 69-68 lead with 6:29 remaining following Logan McIntosh's 3-pointer for UMES and the Bison never trailed again. Kyle Foster added 13 points for the Bison.

Miryne Thomas finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks.

Women

Mount St. Mary's 79, Wagner 56: Juliette Lewis scored a career-high 21 points to lead the host Mount (7-13, 4-5 Northeast Conference) past the Seawolves (3-17, 1-8).

Navy 53, Lehigh 50: Taylor Dunham scored 17 points to lead the host Mids (17-4, 7-3 PL) past the Mountain Hawks (12-9, 6-4). Navy took second place in the league standings with the win.

Coppin State 56, South Carolina State 39: Genesis Lucas had 18 points to lead the host Eagles (5-14, 4-3 MEAC) past the Bulldogs (7-12, 2-5).

UMES 58, Howard 52: Bairesha Gill-Miles had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the host Hawks (5-14, 2-5 MEAC) past the Bison (7-12, 3-3).

Army West Point 62, Loyola Maryland 47: Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Madison Hovren scored a game-high 23 points for the host Black Knights (11-10, 4-6). The loss ended a three-game winning streak by the visiting Greyhounds (6-15, 4-6 PL).
