Digest (March 30): Navy's Shawn Anderson named to CLASS All-America team

Navy men's basketball senior guard Shawn Anderson has been named to the 2017-18 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Senior CLASS Award All-America first team. West Virginia's Jevon Carter was named the Senior Class Award winner and Carter was joined on the Senior CLASS Award All-America first team by Anderson, A.J. Jacobson (North Dakota State), Justin Johnson (Western Kentucky ) and Yante Maten ( Georgia ). The Senior CLASS Award All-America second team features Vladimir Brodziansky (TCU), Angel Delgado (Seton Hall), Rob Gray (Houston), Luke Morrison (Army West Point) and Johnathan Williams ( Gonzaga ). An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition. Anderson was named to the All- Patriot League first team in 2017-18, after making the all-league second team last season. Anderson is involved in community service and he co-founded the non-profit Forever Red Hurricanes with a high school classmate. as one of the 10 finalists in February.

Navy football: Coach Ken Niumatalolo announced that Joe DuPaix will return to the Naval Academy as an assistant coach. DuPaix will coach slotbacks, the position he oversaw while in Annapolis from 2008 through 2010.

Women's college lacrosse: Junior goalie Jillian Petito stopped a pair of free-position shots in the final minute of play as host Mount St. Mary's held off San Diego State for a 13-12 victory on Friday afternoon. Mount St. Mary's held a three-goal advantage with just 2:05 left after a goal by Kate Kinsella. Carly Miller had two goals and two assist for the Mount. ... Sheila Nesselbush (three goals) scored with 2:22 left as No. 11 Northwestern (8-3, 2-0 Big Ten) won, 11-10, over host Johns Hopkins (7-5, 0-3). The Blue Jays led 10-7 before the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run over the final 13 minutes. ... Sara Moeller (St. Paul's) had a hat trick to lead visiting UMBC (9-1, 1-1 America East ) to a 9-7 victory over UMass-Lowell (3-7, 0-2). ... Kelsey Huff scored a game-high four goals to lead No. 16 Southern California (7-4, 5-1 Pac-12) to a 17-3 win over visiting California (4-8, 0-6). ... Ally Kennedy, Courtney Murphy and Kylie Ohlmiller each scored four goals to lead No. 1 Stony Brook (9-0, 2-0 America East) to a 20-2 victory over visiting Vermont (4-7, 6-2). The Seawolves opened with a 7-0 run. ... Kelsey Murray scored four goals to lead No 14 Stanford (8-3, 5-1 Pac-12) to a 20-8 rout over host Arizona State (6-7, 1-5). The Cardinal led 14-5 at the half.

Men's college lacrosse: Senior attackman Justin Guterding had four goals and three assists to become the 13th player in NCAA history to reach the 300-point mark as No. 5 Duke defeated visiting North Carolina, 11-10. ... Jake Buonaiuto had two goals and an assist to lead visting Bryant (5-5, 3-0 Northeast Conference ) to a 10-7 win over No. 14 Robert Morris (6-2, 2-0). The Bulldogs outscored the Colonials, 5-3, in the second half.

Horse racing: Grasshoppin turned back Irish Colonel to win Friday's featured eighth race. Ridden by Sheldon Russell for winter-spring meet-leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez, Grasshoppin ($10.20) ran 7 furlongs in 1:24.05. Sonny Inspired came with a late run to pass two-time Grade 3 winner and 7-5 favorite El Areeb for third.
