NAVY MEN’S BASKETBALL: Ahmad Caver scored 24 points, B.J. Stith added 14 with eight rebounds and four assists and Old Dominion beat Navy 67-44 in Tuesday night's season opener, improving to 7-2 against the Midshipmen.
Caver and Stith, both named to the preseason Conference USA all-conference team, combined for seven of the Monarchs' 10 3-pointers. Xavier Green added 12 points with two steals, helping Old Dominion to score 12 points off of 14 forced turnovers.
Stith's back-to-back 3s sparked a 16-2 run for a 20-point Monarchs' lead and Old Dominion outscored the Midshipmen 6-3 in the final 3:14.
“I thought our guys didn’t play real well at the end of the first half,” said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis. “We couldn’t make a basket. We got down by 15, but then in the first eight minutes of the second half I was real proud of our kids. We battled back and had it down to three points. Then we made two silly turnovers which led to them getting a couple of open threes and they made them to get the lead back up to 10 or 11 points and we didn’t recover.
Luke Loehr and returning starter Ryan Pearson combined for three layups to give Navy an early lead and George Kiernan's 3 tied it at 14 after an Old Dominion rally. Stith's 3-pointer put the Monarchs up for good, 19-14, and Old Dominion led 35-20 at halftime behind Caver's 17 points.
Kiernan scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for Navy, which shot 25 percent from the field (14 of 56).
Navy will open the home portion of its season Friday when it plays host to Maryland as part of the Veterans Classic in Alumni Hall. Game one of the doubleheader features Providence taking on Wichita State.
MCDANIEL FIELD HOCKEY: Sophomore Paige Ford (South River) was named to the All-Centennial Conference Second Team. ,A goalkeeper, Ford started all 16 games in which she appeared, posting a 2.94 goals-against average and .770 save percentage. She tallied double-digit saves in eight games and led the CC with 161 saves.
NAVY WATER POLO: Isaac Salinas earned his fourth Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Rookie of the Week accolade, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Salinas scored nine goals in three games over the weekend for the Midshipmen to lead all Navy scorers.
NAVY SWIMMING: The Patriot League awarded all four of its weekly swimming and diving accolades to members of the Navy teams on Tuesday. Garnering the laurels were Lauren Barber, Bradley Buchter, Meghan Gerdes and Dean Nguyen. The Mids earned the respective nods after each Navy team swept American, Bucknell and Lafayette Saturday in Lewisburg, Pa.
Barber was named the women’s swimmer of the week after she swept the breaststroke events by a combined 12.52 seconds.
Buchter won both diving boards to be tabbed as this week’s men’s diver of the week.
Gerdes was selected as the women’s diver of the week. She was edged for the victory on the one-meter board by teammate Caroline Turner by 2.40 points –– Gerdes accrued 250.70 points –– but tallied 307.85 points to win the three-meter event by 44.30 points.
Nguyen was part of four victories on the day to be tabbed as the men’s swimmer of the week.
