UMBC men's basketball team to be honored at State House, on campus and by Orioles

The UMBC Retrievers men’s basketball team will be honored over the next month for its historic run in the NCAA tournament.

Gov. Larry Hogan will host a reception from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Monday at Government House to honor the team. Afterward, the team will be recognized on Maryland’s House and Senate floors.

Then on Tuesday, UMBC will host a party celebrating the team from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the new UMBC Event Center. On April 20, the Orioles also will honor the team in a “UMBC Pride Night” ceremony at Camden Yards before their game against the Cleveland Indians.

The Retrievers became the first No. 16 team in the men’s tournament to defeat a No. 1 seed when they beat Virginia, 74-54, on March 16, in what some have called the greatest upset in college basketball history. The team’s Cinderella run ended on March 18 in a 50-43 loss to Kansas State.
