Navy women top Houston Baptist, 67-31

The Navy women's basketball team did not have a single player score in double digits, but the Mids used tough defense and scoring from 14 players to beat Houston Baptist, 67-31, Friday in the opening round of the Navy Classic.

The Huskies fell to 0-8.

Alix Membreno and Audrey Bauer led the Mids (3-3) with nine points each.

Houston Baptist's Shanice Steenholdt paced all scorers with 15 points.

The Huskies held a 10-6 lead over Navy five minutes into the game, but the Mids scored the next 10 points to build a 16-10 advantage.

Navy shot 50 percent from the field and held the Huskies to 19 percent.

The Mids will host Maine today at 3:30 p.m.

George Washington 54, Maine 46: Megan Nipe and Danni Jackson each scored 10points as the Colonials (4-3) won their third straight in the opening round of the Navy Classic.

George Washington extended its two-point halftime lead by outscoring the Black Bears (3-4) 23-17 during the second half.

The Colonials will face Houston Baptist today at 6p.m.

John Jay 76, Salisbury 73: After back-and-forth play throughout both halves, the visiting Bloodhounds (4-2) took the lead for good on a free throw by Matt Collins with just under seven minutes to play and beat the host Sea Gulls (4-2) in the opening round of the Optimist Classic.
