Jake Wright scored a game-high 21 points, including three key free throws in the final minute, to lift the host Citadel (4-4) to a 67-60 win over Navy (2-7) on Saturday.

The game stayed close throughout, and Midshipmen guard Brandon Venturini made a 3-pointer to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 59-57 with 59 seconds left.


Citadel guard Ashton Moore then made two free throws, and center P.J. Horgan added a layup before Wright and forward C.J. Bray each made a free throw in a crucial six-point run. Wright then hit two more free-throws with seven seconds left, handing Navy its third straight loss.

Venturini led the Midshipmen with 18 points.

The Mids held a 50-48 lead after forward Edward Alade's dunk with 5:58 left. After that, the Bulldogs scored 19 of the game's final 29 points.

Hampton 71, Coppin State 52: Deron Powers scored 17 points and had seven assists to lead the Pirates (3-5) over the visiting Eagles (1-6) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Coppin State was led by guard Taariq Cephas with 13 points, but the Eagles shot just 26 percent from the field.

Norfolk State 85, Morgan State 65: Junior guard Jeffrey Short scored 24 points to lead the Spartans (5-4) over the visiting Bears (1-7) in a MEAC opener.

Junior forward Cedric Blossom scored 13 points to lead Morgan State.

Iowa 77, UMBC 47: Center Gabe Olaseni matched his career high with 15 points to lead the Hawkeyes (7-2) past the visiting Retrievers (0-8).

UMBC was led by forward Cody Joyce, who scored nine points. Forward Will Darley contributed seven points and eight rebounds for the Retrievers.

Loyola Maryland 56, Mount St. Mary's 49: Freshman guard Bri Betz-White scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Greyhounds (1-6) over the visiting Mountaineers (1-6).

Katrice Dickson led the Mount with nine points.

UMES 71, N.C. Central 61: Jessica Long scored a team-high 15 points and added five rebounds and five assists as the Hawks (3-4) defeated the visiting Eagles (2-5) in a MEAC opener.

West Virginia 83, Coppin State 43: Bria Holmes scored 20 points to lead the Mountaineers (6-1) over the visiting Eagles (1-6).

Tanaysa Henderson led Coppin State with a career-high 13 points.


Norfolk State 68, Morgan State 63: Rae Corbo scored 25 points as the Spartans (2-5) edged the visiting Bears (2-6) in a MEAC opener.

Lexus Spears led Morgan State with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Portland State 56, Navy 50: The Mids (5-4) were held to 28 percent shooting from the field as the host Vikings (1-5) rolled to victory Friday night.
