State hoops roundup (Dec. 22): Mount beats Coppin State, 87-49, to end eight-game skid

Will Miller scored 16 points off the bench to lead five players in double figures as host Mount St. Mary's raced past Coppin State, 87-49, on Thursday night.

Junior Robinson scored 15 points, Elijah Long had 13, and Chris Wray and Miles Wilson scored 11 each for the Mountaineers (2-11), who broke an eight-game losing streak.


Keith Shivers scored 10 to lead the Eagles (1-14), who shot 33 percent (19-for-58) from the field.

The teams last met on a bigger stage — the 2008 NCAA opening round at Dayton, when Mount St. Mary's won, 69-60. It was the Mountaineers' lone NCAA tournament victory at the Division I level.


Wray and Mawdo Sallah each had seven rebounds for Mount St. Mary's, and Long had five assists. The Mount led 48-21 at halftime.

Towson 76, Iona 69: Mike Morsell scored 19 points and was named to the All-Tournament team as the Tigers (8-5) beat the Gaels (8-4) at the South Point Holiday Classic in Las Vegas.

Towson went 1-1 in the tournament, falling to host Nevada, 81-72, on Wednesday.

The Tigers used tough defense to limit Iona to eight points over nearly seven minutes in the second half.

Towson went on an 11-0 run that spanned 3:50.

Hartford 63, Navy 56: Jason Dunne hit four 3-pointers, scored 18 points and had five steals as the host Hawks (5-8) beat the Midshipmen (5-7).

Hartford, a winner of three straight, made 11 of 30 3-point attempts and held Navy to 3-for-23 (13 percent).

J.R. Lynch had a layup and Jalen Ross a 3-pointer to stretch Hartford's lead to 50-42 with 8:52 to play before Nourse Fox scored to end a near four-minute drought for the Mids, and Shawn Anderson followed with a layup to make it a four-point game. Navy remained within four heading into the final minute, when Ross and Lynch combined for seven free throws to seal the game.


Ross finished with three 3s and 14 points, Jack Hobbs had 12 and Lynch 10 for the Hawks. Hassan Attia had career highs of nine rebounds and five blocks to go with his four points.

Tom Lacey had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Navy, and George Kiernan had 10 points.

Akron 76, UMES 60: The Hawks (2-12) were outscored 42-30 in the second half as the Zips (10-3) won the title game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational at UTEP.

Cal Irvine took third place by beating the host Miners, 62-57.

Dontae Caldwell finished with a game-high 17 points and Bakari Copeland had 15 points for UMES. The Hawks haven't won a regular-season tournament title since the 1979 Loyola Holiday Tournament in Baltimore.
