State hoops roundup (March 2): Loyola men lose to BU in Patriot League quarters

Kyle Foreman had 12 points, Justin Alston scored 11 and grabbed seven rebounds, and second-seeded Boston University held visiting seventh seed Loyola Maryland to 36 percent shooting from the field to win Thursday night's Patriot League quarterfinal, 64-60.

The Terriers (18-13) advance to Sunday's semifinals to face No. 3 Lehigh, which beat No. 6 Colgate, 77-72, on Thursday.


Andre Walker's free throw with 1:25 left drew Loyola to 60-58, but Alston hit a jumper for a 62-58 lead. Walker's layup made it a two-point game with 50 seconds left.

The Greyhounds missed two jumpers before fouling Foreman, who made two from the line to stretch BU's lead to 64-60. Alston blocked Jarred Jones' layup and Cedric Hankerson grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Foreman's layup sparked an 11-2 run and the Terriers never trailed in building a 35-22 halftime lead on 54.2 percent shooting from the field to Loyola's 31.8 percent. Walker scored 27 points with four 3-pointers for Loyola (15-16).

Hampton 89, Coppin State 82: Kalin Fisher scored a career-high 21 points, Lawrence Cooks added 15, and the Pirates (14-15, 11-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) rallied to beat the host Eagles (8-23, 7-8).

Coppin State closed to 86-82 on a three-point play by Dejuan Clayton, but Hampton's AJ Astroth made a free throw and Cooks dunked at the buzzer.

Dejuan Clayton scored 21 points for the Eagles, who entered the game tied for seventh place.

UMES 67, Morgan State 66: Ryan Andino made a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to cap a late rally and the host Hawks (12-19, 9-7 MEAC) beat the Bears (14-15, 11-5) in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Andino finished with 13 points, with a trio of 3-pointers, and four rebounds.


Hampton 65, Coppin State 62: The host Eagles (8-20, 8-8 MEAC) were held to one point over the final 2:19 and fell to the Pirates (17-12, 11-5).

Hampton made one field goal and was 4-for-8 from the free-throw line in the closing two minutes. Genesis Lucas (21 points) went 1-for-2 with 25 seconds left to play for Coppin State.

Morgan State 66, UMES 62: The visiting Bears (6-20, 6-9 ,MEAC) used a 7-3 run over the final 47 seconds to beat the Hawks (12-14, 6-9).

UMES' Mariah McCoy hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 59. Braennan Farrar made a three-point play with 35 seconds left for a 62-59 Morgan lead.
