State basketball roundup (Feb. 16): UMBC men continue hot stretch


UMBC 70, UMass-Lowell 66: KJ Jackson posted 17 points and six rebounds as the host Retrievers (17-10, 9-3 America East ) edged the River Hawks (14-13, 6-6). UMBC's Joe Sherburne made two free throws with 15 seconds left for the final margin after Alex Rivera made a steal and basket with 1:05 to go to get UMass Lowell within two.


Arkel Lamar had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Retrievers. Sherburne added 12 points. Brandon Horvath had seven rebounds for the home team.

Christian Lutete had 17 points for the River Hawks. Darius Henderson added 13 points. Obadiah Noel had 11 points.


The Retrievers evened the season series against the River Hawks with the win. UMass Lowell defeated Maryland-Baltimore County 74-63 on Jan. 12. Maryland-Baltimore County matches up against Vermont at home on Thursday. UMass Lowell matches up against Binghamton at home on Thursday.

Towson 92, Drexel 77: Tobias Howard scored a career-high 26 points as the host Tigers (10-17, 6-8 Colonial Athletic Association) beat the Dragons (12-16, 6-9). Brian Fobbs added 25 points for Towson. Howard hit 8 of 10 free throws.

Nakye Sanders had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers.

Towson dominated the first half and led 46-19 at the break. Drexel's 19 first-half points marked a season low for the team.

Alihan Demir had 17 points for the Dragons (12-16, 6-9). Camren Wynter added 13 points and eight assists. Trevor John and Troy Harper had 12 points apiece.

The Tigers leveled the season series against the Dragons with the win. Drexel defeated Towson 72-66 on Jan. 17. Towson plays Hofstra on the road on Thursday. Drexel matches up against Delaware at home next Saturday.

Coppin State 58, UMES 55: Dejuan Clayton (17 points) made a 3-pointer with four seconds left to lift the visiting Eagles (6-21, 6-6 MEAC ) over the Hawks (4-24, 2-11). Ryan Andino had a game-high 20 points for UMES.

Wagner 58, Mount St. Mary's 56: Romone Saunders (12 points) made the game-winnning layup with one second left as the Seahawks (13-12, 8-6) beat the Mount (7-20, 4-10). Mount St. Maryl's Vado Morse made a 3-pointer with six seconds left to tie the game at 56. Morse finished with a game-high 23 points.



Mount St. Mary's 61, Robert Morris 51: Jatarrikah Settle (St. Frances) scored 10 of her career-best 21 points in the fourth quarter and the host Mount (11-12, 5-7 Northeast Conference ) handed the league-leading Colonials (14-9, 11-1) its first league loss of the season.

Settle went 6-of-12 from the field and had six rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Bridget Birkhead had 14 points, going 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and Michaela Harrison had 13 points and six boards.

UMES 74, Coppin State 54: Ra'Jean Martin scored 16 points and Ciani Byrom had 15 points to lead the host Hawks (15-11, 11-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) over the Eagles (2-22, 2-10). Chance Graham and Kaiya Coleman (St. Vincent Pallotti) each scored 16 points for Coppin State.

Loyola Maryland 55, Lafayette 52: Taleah Dixon (McDonogh) made two free throws with 1:11 for a 53-52 lead and the visiting Greyhounds (4-20, 3-10 Patriot League) hung on to beat the Leopards (7-17, 2-11). Delaney Connolly scored a career-high 25 points for Loyola.

UMass-Lowell 62, UMBC 41: The host River Hawks (7-19, 3-10 America East) opened with a 17-6 run and handed the Retrievers (8-17, 1-11 America East) their fifth straight loss. Freshman Eryn Fisher had seven points for UMBC.
