State basketball roundup (Feb. 13): UMBC makes dozen 3s, tops Binghamton; Loyola Maryland rallies past American

Joe Sherburne led four Retrievers in double figures with 16 points and UMBC converted a team America East season-high 12 3-pointers in a 64-50 victory at Binghamton.

UMBC has won seven of their last eight games and four straight on the road as they improved to 16-10 overall and 8-3 in America East play. Binghamton slid to 7-19, 3-8.

The Retrievers knocked down 7-of-11 from long range against the Bearcat zone in the second half and shot 50 percent (12 of 24) for the game.

UMBC freshman guard R.J. Eytle-Rock scored 11 of his season high 13 points in the second half.

Binghamton freshman guard Sam Sessoms, who led all scorers with 23 points, tied the score at 38 on a driving layup with 13:27 remaining. But UMBC junior guard K.J. Jackson knocked down a trey on the next possession and the Retrievers would never trail again.

Eytle-Rock and Sherburne hit back-to-back treys to increase UMBC's lead from 47-45 to 53-45 at the 5:45 mark. After the Beacats knocked down two free throws, the Retrievers scored the next seven points, highlighted by a Sherburne trey to put the visitors ahead, 60-47, with 2:00 left.

Jackson and junior forward Arkel Lamar also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 respectively. Sherburne added a team-high eight rebounds, while Jackson contributed 5 assists and 3 steals. Junior guard Ricky Council II hit all three shots from behind the arc and finished with 9 points.

UMBC held Binghamton to just 38 percent shooting (19-of-50), while hitting 12-of-23 shots in the second half and finishing at 45.3 percent (24-of-53) for the game.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half.

Loyola Maryland 86, American 84: Andrew Kostecka tied his career-high with 31 points, Casmir Ochiaka scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds for his first double double, and Isaiah Hart made two free throws with 1.6 seconds left to lift the Greyhounds. American (13-11 overall, 7-6 Patriot League) held a 74-63 lead with 4:34 left, but Loyola (9-17, 5-8) ended the game on a 23-10 run.

Women

Holy Cross 47, Navy 44: Jennifer Coleman scored a game-high 14 points, but the visiting Mids (9-13, 4-8 Patriot League) fell to the Crusaders (14-9, 6-6). Holy Cross used a 12-8 run in the third quarter to pull ahead.

American 67, Loyola Maryland 56: Taleah Dixon (McDonogh) had a personal-best and game-high 25 points, but the host Greyhounds (3-20, 2-10 Patriot) fell to the Eagles (15-8, 11-1). American made seven free throws over the final minute to hold off Loyola.

Binghamton 58, UMBC 46: The host Retrievers (8-16, 1-10 America East) led 17-1 in the first quarter before the Bearcats (10-15, 5-7) outscored UMBC, 49-19, in the second half. Te'Jay Oliver had a game-high 20 points for UMBC. The win ended a three-game losing streak by Binghamton.
