Senior forward Alex Gavrilovic hit a 3-pointer from the corner to give Towson the lead with 3.5 seconds remaining in overtime in a come-from-behind 79-75 victory over host Monmouth in the final game Sunday of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
With the scored tied and 36 seconds remaining, Gavrilovic grabbed a rebound off a shot by forward Eddie Keith II and put it back for a dunk to give the Tigers a 74-72 lead. After a timeout, Hawks guard Andrew Nicholas drained a long 3-pointer despite a hand in his face.
On the next possession, Towson (4-1) took its time before Keith drove and found Gavrilovic in the corner for the winner. The Hawks (2-2) never got a shot off, as they stepped out of bounds, and guard Four McGlynn sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
McGlynn had a career-high 27 points on 5-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc, and was 6-for-7 from the foul line. Freshman John Davis earned his second double double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Guard A.J. Astroth also had a career day with 22 points, and forward Timajh Parker-Rivera added 10 rebounds.
The Tigers dominated the glass by outrebounding the Hawks 48-26. Towson converted its 18-8 offensive rebounding advantage into 15 points.
Navy 70, Binghamton 68: Senior guard Brandon Venturini had a season-high 26 points to lead the Midshipmen over the Bearcats for their first win, in a consolation game in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in Uncasville, Conn.
Navy (1-4) trailed 53-42 with just more than 13 minutes left after leading 32-31 at halftime. But the Midshipmen rallied and tied the game at 62 on guard Zach Fong's 3-pointer with 5:10 left. The teams went scoreless for nearly the next two minutes.
After Binghamton guard Romello Walker scored a 3-pointer to make it 69-68, Navy guard Tilman Dunbar (11 points) hit one of two free throws with 19 seconds left.
The Bearcats (1-4) had two chances to tie, but Yosef Yacob missed from underneath and Willie Rodriguez's 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.
Rodriguez led Binghamton with 15 points. Yacob and forward Dusan Perovic, who hit all three of his 3-point attempts, had 12 each, and forward Nick Madray added 10.
Denver 80, Coppin State 54: Arnold Fripp scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds during the visiting Eagles' loss.
Coppin State (0-4) had a pair of two-point leads early at 9-7 and 11-9. Despite trailing 34-23 at intermission, Daquan Brickhouse made a 3-pointer to pull the Eagles to within 35-30 with 17:18 minutes, 18 seconds remaining in the game. That was the closest the Eagles got.
Picked to finish second in the Summitt League preseason poll, Denver (2-1) had five players reach double figures, led by Brett Olsen's 14 points.
Women
Robert Morris 84, UMBC 60: Sophomore guard Emily Russo (Glenelg) scored a career-high 14 points and junior guard Capree Garner finished with a game-high 23, but it was not enough as the Colonials handed the host Retrievers their first loss of the season.
Robert Morris (1-2) shot 50 percent from the field, including 81.8 percent from beyond the arc in the second half. UMBC (3-1) shot its lowest percentage from the field this season, finishing at 34.5 percent.
Wake Forest 65, Coppin State 54: Though the visiting Eagles (0-3) outscored the Demon Deacons (4-0) in the second half, they could not overcome a 13-point deficit at the half.
Guard Keena Samuels paced Coppin State with a career-high 17 points. Bria Harris added 10 points and seven rebounds for her second consecutive game in double-figure points.
Dearica Hamby led Wake Forest with 29 points and 15 rebounds.
Texas Tech 65, Morgan State 57: The Bears (2-3) shot just 27.6 percent from the field as the host Raiders (4-0) remained undefeated this season.
Morgan State junior guard Tracey Carrington (Dundalk) led all players with 27 points.
