Willie Rodriguez scored 15 points and had eight rebounds before fouling out to help pull Binghamton out of the America East basement with a 68-56 win over host UMBC on Wednesday night.
Bobby Ahearn added 11 points for Binghamton (3-20, 2-6), which shot 46 percent from the field on 52 attempts and never trailed in the game. The win ended a four-game skid and lifted the Bearcats out of a three-way tie for last place now shared by UMBC and Maine.
Binghamton took control with a 17-5 run midway through the first half ignited by a basket from Rodriguez and carried a 33-24 advantage into the break.
UMBC (3-18, 1-7) cut the gap to four with Devarick Houston's dunk to make it 36-32 with 15:40 to go, but Binghamton steadily pulled away down the stretch.
Jourdan Grant led UMBC with 20 points and Ben Grace had 17.
Women
UMBC 71, Binghamton 55: Taylor McCarley scored a game-high 24 points and the Retrievers (7-14, 2-6 America East) outscored the Bearcats (4-17, 2-6) by 22-0 in the paint, ending a three-game losing streak.
Kim Albrecht had 19 points for Binghamton.
Postponements
The Loyola Maryland men and women's teams have rescheduled Wednesday's games with Holy Cross to today because of the effects of the recent winter storm.
The men (7-12, 3-5 Patriot League) will host the Crusaders (8-10, 3-5) tonight at 7:30, and the women (5-14, 3-5) will travel to the Crusaders (8-13, 4-4) and play tonight at 7.
