Michigan ends losing streak, routs visiting Coppin, 72-56

Freshman Ricky Doyle scored a career-high 16 points and Zak Irvin added 13 points and seven rebounds as Michigan routed visiting Coppin State, 72-56, on Monday night to end a four-game losing streak.

Kameron Chatman added nine points while Derrick Walton Jr. recorded nine points, five rebounds and a career-high nine assists for the Wolverines (7-5), who shot 47.2 percent to end their longest losing streak since January 2011.

Caris LeVert and Mark Donnal chipped in eight points apiece to help Michigan close its nonconference schedule on a winning note.

Taariq Cephas and Sterling Smith paced the Eagles (1-10) with 11 points and five assists apiece.

Daquan Brickhouse scored 10 points and Arnold Fripp added nine for Coppin State, which lost its sixth straight while shooting 34.4 percent from the field, including 9-of-33 from 3-point range.

Michigan opened by making nine of its first 11 shots and led 21-3 with just under 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Irvin scored 11 points in the opening period as the Wolverines shot 63 percent and took a 42-26 lead into the break.

The Wolverines, who shot a season-low 31.5 percent in Saturday's 62-51 loss to Southern Methodist, moved ahead 56-33 on Walton's 3-pointer with 10:51 left. LeVert grabbed eight rebounds for Michigan, which recorded a season-high 43 boards and won despite shooting 14-of-26 from the foul line.

Mount St. Mary's 69, Binghamton 68: Andrew Smeathers hit a pair of free throws with 2.9 seconds left to lift the Mount (4-6) over the visiting Bearcats (1-13).

Chris Martin paced the Mountaineers with 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Mount led the entire game until Binghamton's Willie Rodriguez converted a pair of free throws with 13.8 seconds on the clock that gave the Bearcats a 68-67 advantage.

The Mountaineers then inbounded the ball and called timeout at midcourt with 9.1 seconds left. Smeathers received the ball on the right wing, and was fouled. He went to the line and sank both shots with 2.9 seconds left.

Binghamton's Yosef Yacob's half-court shot at the buzzer hit the front of the rim.

Martin went 8-for-15 from the field while collecting a career-best eight rebounds to pace the Mount in the win. Kristijan Krajina added 14 points while Junior Robinson tallied 12 points and five assists.

Rodriguez scored a career-high 25 points while adding seven rebounds for the Bearcats.

UMES 82, St. Bonaventure 80: Forward Mike Myers led five Hawks in double figures with 19 points and visiting UMES prevailed in a nonconference game Monday.

Guard Devin Martin scored 17 points, while guards Devon Walker and Ryan Andino each scored 12 for the Hawks (6-8), who have won five of their past seven games. Guard Ishaq Pitt added 10 points for the UMES.

UMES made 10 of 17 3-point attempts.

Guard Marcus Posley led the Bonnies (7-3) with 26 points, while center Youssou Ndoye scored 18.

The Hawks were 17-for-29 from the field (58.6 percent) and led 45-33 at the break.

Women

UMBC 87, UMES 78: The Retrievers (5-5) shot 50 percent from the field en route to defeating the Hawks (4-7) and ending a two-game skid.

UMBC sophomore guard Taylor McCarley recorded career bests of 19 points and six steals, dished out a season-best seven assists and had five rebounds. Junior guard Liz McNaughton made four of the Retrievers' six 3-pointers for a career-best 18 points, and classmate Capree Garner added 17 points.

Senior center Dana Lewis and sophomore Amanda Hagaman combined for 9-for-9 from the field for 18 points.

UMES lost its third straight.

Cornell 79, Loyola Maryland 61: The Greyhounds (2-8) led for nearly eight minutes in the first half but lost to the visiting Big Red (6-4).

Junior Jeneh Perry led Loyola with 16 points, and Nia Marshall and Bri Betz-White, the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, added 14 and 10, respectively. Nia Marshall led Cornell with 24, and Nicholle Aston had 21.
