State basketball roundup (Feb. 5): UMES men halt seven-game slide, 62-61

Logan McIntosh scored 13 points Monday night and hit two free throws with 6.4 seconds left to help host UMES end a seven-game skid, 62-61 over Florida A&M (4-22, 3-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference ).

Ahmad Frost led the Hawks (6-19, 2-8) with 19 points and Miryne Thomas had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

UMES trailed 57-52 before Frost hit a 3-pointer with 3:10 left that sparked a 10-4 run to close the game.

The Rattlers retook the lead on Marcus Barham's layup and Desmond Williams' free throw made it 60-58. Thomas tied it with a jumper with 53 seconds left and Williams made another free throw with 29 seconds left before McIntosh's foul shots sealed it.

Coppin State 84, South Carolina State 60: Lamar Morgan hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and Lucian Brownlee scored 15 points to help the visiting Eagles beat the Bulldogs (8-17, 4-6 MEAC).

Karonn Davis and Chad Andrews-Fulton had 10 points apiece for Coppin State (5-21, 5-6), which set season highs for points, field goals made (30) and field-goal percentage (52.6). Andrews-Fulton also tied his career-high with nine rebounds and Davis had seven assists.

Morgan State 97, Howard 61: Tiwian Kendley scored 27 points, Phillip Carr had 20 points and 13 rebounds and the host Bears ended their two-game losing streak with a rout of the Bison (7-18, 4-5 MEAC).

Morgan State (9-14, 5-5) shot 49.2 percent from the field and 90.3 percent from the free-throw line, making 28 of 31 attempts. The Bears also shot 9-for-20 from 3-point range.

Women

UMES 87, Florida A&M 70: Jordyn Smith scored 22 points to carry the host Hawks over the Rattlers (5-18, 2-8).

Smith shot 8-for-13 from the field and made all six of her free-throw attempts for UMES, which shot 44.3 percent from the field.

Keyera Eaton scored 17 points, Ciani Byrom had 12, Tori Morris added 11 and Bairesha Gill-Miles chipped in 10 points and 15 rebounds for UMES (7-15, 4-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), which has won three of its past four games.

South Carolina State 67, Coppin State 65, OT: Bryeasha Blair made two free throws in the final two minutes of overtime and the host Bulldogs (9-15, 4-6 MEAC) overcame a 19-point third-quarter deficit to defeat the Eagles (6-17, 5-6).

Blair also made a layup with eight seconds to go in regulation to tie the game at 63 and force the extra period. She led S.C. State with 17 points.

Genesis Lucas scored 19 points and Maraiyah Smith added 15 for Coppin State. Chance Graham had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Howard 68, Morgan State 61: Jayla Thornton scored 15 points off the bench to lift the visiting Bison (9-13, 5-4 MEAC) over the Bears (12-11, 5-5).

Braennan Farrar scored 19 points, Adre'onia Coleman added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Lexus Spears chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds for Morgan State, which had its two-game winning streak ended.

St. Francis Brooklyn (N.Y.) 75, Mount St. Mary's 56: Jade Johnson scored 22 points to help the visiting Terriers (9-13, 5-6 Northeast Conference ) rout the Mountaineers (7-15, 4-7).

Ashlee White scored 16 points off the bench to lead Mount St. Mary's, which was outrebounded 45-29.
