State basketball (March 13): Coppin State men fall to N.C. A&T in OT in MEAC quarterfinals

Ronald Jackson had 21 points and 14 rebounds as North Carolina A&T edged past Coppin State, 82-79, in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Conference Tournament on Wednesday night in Norfolk, Va.

Quavius Copeland had 14 points for No. 2 seed N.C. A&T (19-12). Terry Harris added 14 points. Kameron Langley had 10 points and 12 assists for NC A&T.

Milik Gantz, the Aggies’ second leading scorer heading into the contest at 9.0 points per game, shot only 8 percent in the game (1-for-12).

Lamar Morgan had 17 points for the No. 7 seed Eagles (8-25). Kent Auslander added 16 points and seven rebounds. Dejuan Clayton had 16 points and nine assists.

Morgan finishes his Coppin career with 170 3-pointers in just two seasons to rank eighth in school-history, but his 2.6 3s per game in his career are the most in school history.

Illinois needed overtime to beat rival Northwestern in an overtime thriller, 74-69, on Day 1 of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday at the United Center. The Illini advance to take on Iowa on Thursday night. Earlier Wednesday, Nebraska rallied to top Rutgers.

Women

UMES 57, South Carolina State 34: Second-seeded UMES women’s basketball team used two 21-point quarters to carry them past South Carolina State, 57-34, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at the Scope in Norfolk, Va. Wednesday.

The Hawks (17-13) will face the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between Bethune-Cookman and Coppin State in Friday’s semifinal at 2:30 p.m. The Bulldogs fell to 16-16.

UMES was led by Adrienne Jones (13 points, Harford CC), Ciani Byrom (12 points) and Keyera Eaton (eight points). Taylor Brown had 11 points for South Carolina State, which led 9-4 in the first quarter. The Hawks answered with a 21-7 run in the second quarter and a 21-6 run in the third quarter.

Tuesday’s men

Coppin State 81, Morgan State 71: Dejuan Clayton had 23 points as Coppin State topped Morgan State 81-71 in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tourney on Tuesday night in Norfolk, Va.

Clayton hit 12 of 15 free throws.

Chad Andrews-Fulton had 12 points for Coppin State (8-24). Kent Auslander added 12 points and seven rebounds. Justin Steers had 11 points and three blocks for Coppin State.

Sherwyn Devonish-Prince Jr. had 15 points for the Bears (9-21). Stanley Davis added 12 points and six rebounds. Isaiah Burke had 11 points.
