Denzel Richardson made a 3-pointer as time ran out to give Eastern Kentucky a 66-63 victory over host Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles (1-13), who have lost nine in a row, tied the score on guard Dallas Gary's three-point play with 26 seconds remaining, but Richardson answered with his game-winning shot. The guard finished with just five points, but the last three made the difference.
Guard Corey Walden had the assist on the winning play. He also finished with a game-high 33 points, making 13 of 16 shots from the field, including three of four 3-pointers.
Coppin State shot 50 percent from the field (21 of 42), but the Eagles hurt their cause with 26 turnovers.
The Colonels (7-5) rallied after Coppin State started fast. The Eagles took a 10-point lead just over five minutes into the game but couldn't hold it.
Coppin State had three: Taariq Cephas topped the Eagles with 17 points, Christian Kessee added 13, and Sterling Smith had 10.
The Eagles will try to break the losing streak Jan. 3 at Akron.
UMES 63, Tennessee-Martin 60: Devon Walker scored 16 points as the Hawks (8-8) beat the host Skyhawks (7-5) to extend their winning streak to four games.
Mike Myers went 6-of-9 from the field and scored 14 points for the Hawks. Deville Smith had 15 points for Tennessee-Martin, while Marshun Newell added 14 points.
UMES 86, Monmouth 73: Alexis Udoji (22 points) led three scorers with 20 or more points for host UMES (5-7).
The other two were Moengaro Subritzky (21) and TeAmber Burke (20). The victory over Monmouth (5-6) ended a three-game losing streak and marked the first win over Monmouth in the Battle of the Hawks series dating to 2000.
La Salle 65, UMBC 62: Dana Lewis made a pair of free throws with 5.3 seconds left to draw the visiting Retrievers (5-7) to within one, but the Explorers (9-4) held them off with a pair of free throws by freshman Amy Griffin with 4.3 seconds left for the win.
Lewis finished with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting and had a team-best eight rebounds. Capree Garner led the way with a game-high 22 points, her fifth 20-point performance of the season.
Niagara 78, Mount St. Mary's 60: Jacqueline Brewer had 14 points in a losing effort as the visiting Mount (2-9) fell to the Purple Eagles (6-5) in their final nonconference game of the season.
Mount St. Mary's suffered from a slow start as Niagara built a 22-point first-half lead.
In addition to Brewer's 14 points, the Mount got 13 from Kathleen Belanger-Finn and 10 from freshman Caroline Hummell.
