State basketball roundup: UMBC men trounced, 66-39, in America East quarterfinal

Second-seeded Vermont advanced to the America East Conference semifinals with a 66-39 victory over UMBC on Wednesday.

Sophomore forward Will Darley (Dulaney) led the Retrievers with 14 points and nine rebounds and junior forward Cody Joyce (Southern) added 10 points and seven rebounds.

But UMBC (4-26) shot just 32.7 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers and lost contact with the Catamounts (18-12) early in the second half.

Vermont senior forward Harold Hector, who did not score against UMBC in the meeting Feb. 14, hit four of five shots from behind the arc and propelled the hosts to a 32-16 halftime edge. UMBC struggled in the environment at Patrick Gym in the first half, hitting only eight of 25 from the field, going 0-for-6 from behind the arc and committing 10 turnovers. Hector did not score in the second half but led the Catamounts in scoring with 14 points.

UMBC freshman guard Jourdan Grant (Archbishop Spalding) recorded four assists and finished the season with 121, a UMBC Division I freshman record.

Saint Francis (Pa.) 73, Mount St. Mary's 58: Earl Brown scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the fifth-seeded Red Flash past the host Mount in the Northeast Conference quarterfinal.

Greg Brown contributed 24 points and Ronnie Drinnon had 11 rebounds for Saint Francis (16-14), which shot 52.4 percent from the field on 42 attempts and controlled the boards 35-17. It was Brown's 12th double double of the season.

The Red Flash closed out the first half with an 8-2 burst to take a 29-24 advantage. Mount St. Mary's (15-15) cut the gap early in the second to 33-31 on a 3-pointer by Charles Glover, but Saint Francis responded with a 13-2 run that included 3s by Ollie Jackson and Dominique Major.

Will Miller led the Mountaineers with 14 points, Byron Ashe added 11 and Kristijan Krajina 10.

The Red Flash will play St. Francis-Brooklyn in a semifinal Saturday.

Stevenson 72, McDaniel 66: Christian Roberts had 16 points and Justin Kuntz (Glen Burnie) had 15 points to lead the Mustangs (19-9) past the host Green Terror (14-13) in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference South tournament.

Tim Stewart had a game-high 18 points for McDaniel.

Hood 59, Waynesburg 55: Chris Cook made two free throws with 50 seconds remaining to give the Blazers (15-12) the lead, 57-55, for good over the host Yellow Jackets (18-11) in ECAC first-round action.

Hood had trailed for most of the game. The Blazers will face Stevenson in Saturday's semifinal at Bethany, W.Va., at 9 p.m.

Women

William & Mary 68, Towson 56: Dominique Johnson had 15 points in a losing effort for the host Tigers (10-20, 6-12 Colonial Athletic Associaton).

The Tribe improved to 15-14, 9-9.

Lafayette 58, Loyola Maryland 46: The Greyhounds (7-23, 5-13) shot 25.4 percent from the field and lost to the host Leopards (14-16, 6-12) in a Patriot League first-round game.

Colleen Marshall had 17 points for Loyola Maryland.
