State basketball: Navy men lose, but women win

Brandon Alston had three 3-pointers with 14 points, Austin Price scored 11 and host Lehigh pulled away early in the second half to beat Navy, 61-47, in men's basketball Wednesday night.

Justin Goldsborough's layup with 17:01 left broke a 34-all tie, giving the Mountain Hawks (9-9, 3-4 Patriot League) the lead for good and sparking a 10-0 run over the next 3 minutes, 16 seconds.

The Midshipmen (7-12, 3-4) closed the gap to 46-40 on Will Kelly's layup at 7:32, but Lehigh stretched its lead with another run to 57-42 on Kahron Ross' free throw with 2:59 left.

Tim Kempton added 10 points and nine boards for Lehigh. Goldsborough also scored 10, and Ross had nine points and seven assists.

Tilman Dunbar led Navy with 13 points. Brandon Venturini added 10.

The Mids trailed only 29-28 at the break and opened the scoring in the second half for their last lead at 30-29.

Bucknell 75, Loyola Maryland 61: Andre Walker scored 17 points, but the host Greyhounds (7-11, 3-4 Patriot) fell to the Bison (10-10, 5-2).

Chris Hass scored 26 points and grabbed five rebounds for Bucknell. Hass did it with 10-for-15 shooting from the field, including four 3-pointers. Steven Kaspar added 14 points off the bench for the Bison, and Nana Foulland had 10 points and seven rebounds.

John Azzinaro made back-to-back 3-pointers to give Bucknell a 33-25 lead with 3:31 remaining in the first half and the Bison were up 36-28 at the break.

A trio of 3s by Hass made it 50-38 with 13:05 to play. The Greyhounds pulled to within seven, 61-54, on a 3-pointer by Tyler Hubbard with 6:20 left, but never got closer.

Women

Navy 47, Lehigh 44: Hannah Fenske scored the final five points of the game, including two free throws with 12.2 seconds left, and the host Mids (11-7, 5-2 Patriot) held off a final surge by the Mountain Hawks (12-5, 4-3) to win.

Lehigh trailed by seven with just more than eight minutes to play before coming back to take a one-point lead with 1:30 left. Fenske finished with 11 points and Taylor Dunham had 10 points for Navy, which was held to a season-low scoring total.

The Mountain Hawks took a 44-42 lead with 4:12 left. Fenske made a 3-pointer with 91 seconds left to end a seven-minute scoring drought for the Mids and give Navy a 45-44 lead..

Bucknell 66, Loyola Maryland 49: Jeneh Perry had 12 points and the Greyhounds (5-13, 3-4 Patriot) have lost two of the past three games. The host Bison improved to 12-6, 4-3.

Loyola Maryland shot 25.8 percent from the field. Bucknell shot 42.6percent and led 34-20 at the break. Audrey Dotson and Claire Maree O'Bryan scored 13 points each to lead the Bison.

"I was pleased with the way we came out early," Bucknell coach Aaron Roussell said.
