State hoops: Loyola Maryland men cap stunning comeback with 91-86 overtime win vs. Boston U.

Trailing visiting Boston University by five points Sunday with 5.8 seconds left in regulation, Loyola Maryland got a desperation 3-pointer from guard Denzel Brito and two unlikely free throws from forward Franz Rassman to tie a game the Greyhounds later won in overtime, 91-86.

After the Terriers' John Papale missed the second of two free throws with less than six seconds remaining, Brito made a 3-pointer for Loyola (7-10, 3-3 Patriot League) with one second remaining, and Rassman fouled a Boston University player on the ensuing inbounds pass.

During the dead-ball situation, the referees went to the courtside monitor to check for a possible flagrant foul away from the ball before Brito's 3-pointer. After a long review of the play, the officiating crew called a flagrant-1 foul on a Terriers player for striking Rassman in the back of the head.

Rassman made both free throws to tie the game at 74, but the Terriers (7-10, 3-3) still had a chance to retake the lead. Eric Fanning missed both free throws awarded for Rassman's foul, however, and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, after Brito nailed a 3-pointer from the right side to give the Greyhounds a two-point lead, 85-83, with about a minute left, Papale had a good look from beyond the arc, but his attempt went off the rim and to Loyola guard Eric Laster. He was fouled, then missed both free throws.

Boston University had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead with 28.5 seconds left, but guard Andre Walker came up with a steal in the paint as a pass deflected off the hands of an open Terriers player, and Walker was fouled. He made both free throws with 19.4 remaining, and after forward Cam Gregory blocked a layup by the Terriers' Cedric Hankerson, Walker converted on two more from the foul line to secure the win.
