State college basketball roundup (Dec. 31): UMBC men beat UMES, 89-75

Jairus Lyles scored 26 points, Will Darley had 23 and Rodney Elliott (John Carroll) added 20 as the host UMBC men's basketball team beat UMES, 89-75.

Lyles, a Virginia Commonwealth transfer, has played in three games for UMBC (4-10) and has 77 points. He had 27 in a loss to Howard and 24 in a loss to Towson.

Elliott missed all of the 2014-15 season because of an injury and scored a career high. Darley, who leads UMBC in field-goal percentage (54.7 percent), made all eight of his shots from the field.

Freshman Joe Sherburne added 10 points for UMBC to finish in double figures for the 11th time in 14 games.

Devin Martin, who scored 34, 37 and 23 points in his last previous games, finished with 24 on 9-for-20 shooting for UMES (3-12). He made five of the Hawks' nine 3-pointers.

Towson 76, William & Mary 69: William Adala Moto and Mike Morsell scored 18 points apiece to help the visiting Tigers (10-4) beat the Tribe (8-4) in a Colonial Athletic Association opener.

Morsell grabbed eight rebounds, and Adala Moto made 10 of 12 free-throw attempts.

Towson trailed 39-34 at halftime but took a 43-41 lead in the opening minutes of the second half as William & Mary went three-plus minutes without a field goal. William & Mary had another drought, this time six-plus minutes, and Towson went on a 10-0 run for a 64-54 lead.

Byron Hawkins added 13 points for Towson, which was just 2-for-12 from 3-point range but made 22 of 27 free throws.

David Cohn led William & Mary with 16 points. Sean Sheldon and Omar Prewitt each added 14 points.

Prewitt made two free throws with 1:09 remaining to pull within 68-65, but Towson made eight of 10 free throws to seal it.

Bakersfield 80, Morgan State 68: Aly Ahmed scored 21 points, Kevin Mays added 18 and both had eight rebounds to lead the host Roadrunners (9-5) past the Bears (2-10).

The duo combined for 25 points on 11-for-15 shooting in the first half, when the Roadrunners shot 53 percent and finished with a plus-11 rebounding advantage to forge a 42-30 lead.

The Bears never cut the lead below 10, and went without a field goal for almost seven minutes. Bakersfield led 57-34 when Brent Wrapp made a 3-point play with 12:35 to play.

Cedric Blossom had 19 points and Rasean Simpson had 15 for Morgan State, which shot 36 percent for the game, including 4-for-14 from 3-point range.

Bakersfield finished at 51 percent from the field and had 20 assists on 28 baskets.
