Sophomore Ashley Owusu and senior Katie Benzan of the Big Ten champion Maryland women’s basketball team earned All-America honors from The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Owusu earned a third team All-America nod and Benzan earned honorable mention honors.
Owusu leads the nation’s top offense in scoring (18.3) and assists (5.8). The Terps are currently leading the country in scoring (91.3) and in assist turnover ratio (1.69).
Owusu was named Big Ten Tournament Co-Most Outstanding Player and earned unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors.
Benzan was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team and is averaging 13.3 points per game. Earlier this year, she broke a Maryland record for threes made in a game with nine vs. Iowa.
Benzan is leading the country with her three-point field goal percentage of 50.6 percent. As a team, the Terps are No. 1 in the nation with their three-point field goal percentage of 40.7 percent.
Maryland earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship in San Antonio, Texas.
The Terps, who are in the Hemisfair Region, will face 15th-seeded Mount St. Mary’s (17-6) Monday at 4 p.m. on ESPN. The winner of Monday’s game will advance to face the winner of a matchup between No. 7-seeded Alabama (16-9) and No. 10-seeded North Carolina (13-10).
Towson women’s basketball: Towson assistant coach Cheyenne Curley has been named a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 honoree.
Curley is in her second year of assistant coaching for Towson and has helped the Tigers to 27-24 record during her stint.
Before being promoted to the role of assistant coach, Curley served as the Director of Basketball Operations for five years.
Curley works primarily with the guards on the team, helping Kionna Jeter to become one of the top-scorers in the country and top-three in the Colonial Athletic Association for two consecutive seasons. Curley also helped guide Q. Murray to set the second consecutive single-season assist record.
