Horseshoe Casino Baltimore plans to soon become the state's first casino to enable patrons to place bets on horse racing.
The betting equipment will be installed in time for the Kentucky Derby on May 2 and the Preakness on May 16, Chad Barnhill, senior vice president and general manager, told the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission at Thursday's monthly meeting.
"It is not an item subject to our regulatory oversight," Charles LaBoy, the agency's assistant director for gaming, said after the meeting. "However it is in the casino, so we did our own level of due diligence. It was also something they worked out with the racing commission."
Horseshoe said through a spokesman that the betting space will be on the first floor, near the Baltimore Marketplace, and will offer carrels and TV monitors for bettors.
Two self-betting terminals are planned, and there will be a teller for big events like the Preakness.
Details were not immediately available on exactly when the terminals will open and which tracks will be simulcast.
