The UMBC women's basketball program will play for the America East tournament championship this weekend.
Behind senior Michelle Kurowski's game-high 25 points, the fifth-seeded Retrievers stunned top-seeded Boston University, 77-61, in the conference semifinals Sunday at the University of Hartford.
UMBC (17-14) will travel to Albany to take on the second-seeded Great Danes on Saturday at 8 p.m. Albany advanced to the championship game after a 58-50 win over sixth-seeded Binghamton in the semifinals. Saturday's UMBC-Albany winner will move on to the NCAA tournament.
Topé Obajolu, a Randallstown native, aided the Retrievers' effort Sunday with 13 points, while Erin Brown chipped in with 11 points. Kurowski was 8-for-18 from the floor, including 5-for-7 from beyond the arc. The Retrievers' 77 points were a season high, besting their 75-point effort in a win over Maine in January.
Saturday's game against Albany will be UMBC's second America East finals appearance. The Retrievers beat Hartford, 48-46, in 2007 for the title.
