Maryland junior running back Jacquille Veii, who was moved back to the position after spending most of last season as a slot receiver, will transfer after the semester, an athletic department spokesman said Tuesday.

The 5-foot-9, 187-pound Veii was expected to be third on the depth chart going into preseason practice this summer, behind senior Brandon Ross and junior Wes Brown, who sat out the spring recovering from an injury.

As a sophomore, Veii caught 16 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 19 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns. In the past three regular season games in 2014, Veii started in place of injured star Stefon Diggs and caught 10 passes for 122 yards.

Veii, who played at the Avalon School in Montgomery County, will have to sit out a year if he transfers to another Football Bowl Subdivision school. Veii is the second running back – and third player – to transfer from Maryland since last week.

Running back Albert Reid, who was projected behind Veii on the depth chart, and backup safety Zach Dancel have also informed Maryland coach Randy Edsall that they planned to transfer after graduating. Both Reid and Dancel will be immediately eligible after they graduate.

Edsall was not available for comment.
