College hoops roundup: Morgan State edges Norfolk state to begin MEAC slate

Kyle Thomas hit the game-winning shot with 30 seconds left and Phillip Carr had a career-high 29 points with 12 rebounds as Morgan State beat visiting Norfolk State, 58-56.
The Bears improved to 4-10, 1-0 MEAC; the Spartans dropped to 3-12, 0-1.
Morgan State led 54-51 with 2:58 left, but a 3-pointer by Zaynah Robinson followed by a layup for Norfolk State gave the Spartans a 56-55 lead with 43 seconds remaining. After a Spartans timeout, Thomas took a pass from Martez Cameron and hit a jumper to reclaim the lead for the Bears, this time for good. A free throw by Carr with one second left finished the scoring.
Coppin State 75, South Carolina State 59: Chas Brown (Baltimore City Community College) scored 19 points and the host Eagles (2-14, 1-0 MEAC) got their first win against a Division I team, beating the Bulldogs (3-11, 0-1).
Josh Treadwell added 14 points off the bench and Tre' Thomas (BCCC), Dejuan Clayton and Terry Harris Jr. (BCCC) added 12 points apiece for Coppin.
Coppin State 70, South Carolina State 54: The host Eagles (1-12, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) broke a 12-game losing streak behind a 24-point performance from Genesis Lucas. The Bulldogs fell to 3-9 and 0-1.
Norfolk State 56, Morgan State 47: The host Bears (2-12, 0-1 MEAC) fell behind 16-4 in the first quarter and couldn't catch up to the Spartans (6-7, 0-1) despite 13 points by Braennan Farrar.
