The longtime swimming coach at St. Mary's College has been arrested on child pornography charges.
Andre Barbins, 45, of Solomons was charged Friday with one count of child pornography and one count of displaying obscene matter to a minor, according to Maryland State Police. Investigators executed a search warrant at his home Friday and said they found digital-storage devices containing images of child pornography. The Department of Homeland Security also assisted in the investigation.
Barbins was taken to the Calvert County Detention Center for processing and is awaiting a court hearing.
Barbins has coached the Seahawks men's and women's teams since the 1998-89 season and been named Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times. He is married and has two daughters, according to the St. Mary's athletic department website.
In a release Tuesday, the school said it is "taking all steps necessary to protect the safety of its campus and community, and is cooperating fully with law enforcement." Assistant coach Hattie Schiavone has been named interim coach.
