Blast sign six players to prepare for inaugural MASL season

The Baltimore Blast has re-signed five players from last year's team and signed a newcomer as the team shapes its roster for the inaugural season of the Major Arena Soccer League.

Goalkeeper William Vanzela, defender Pat Healey, midfielder Lucio Gonzaga and forwards Adauto Neto and Adriano Dos Santos will return and forward Jerjer Gibson, who played for the Pennsylvania Roar last season, also joins the team.

When the Blast left the Major Indoor Soccer League following the 2013-14 season, all player contracts were voided. These six players are the first signed as Blast general manager Kevin Healey builds the 18-man roster.

"Our priority is to bring back as many players as we can from last year's team," Healey said. "We have these five players now signed and will continue to bring back our players. In the meantime, we're always looking for new players to strengthen our team and Jerjer is a good start there."

Vanzela, who will enter his third season, is coming off a breakthrough season. He was named the MISL's Goalkeeper of the Year after posting a league-best 5.57 points per game average.

Pat Healey, who finished second in the MISL with 32 blocked shots last season, and Gonzaga both enter their seventh season for the team. Neto will be playing his 12th professional indoor season and sixth with the Blast, while Dos Santos comes back for his fourth year with the team.

As a rookie last season, Gibson finished with six goals and an assist for the Roar.
