Varsity girls lacrosse roundup: No. 1 Eagles open with 92nd straight win

The No. 1 McDonogh girls lacrosse team opened its season Wednesday night with a 12-8 win in Vero Beach, Fla., to extend its winning streak to 92 games.

In a showdown of the top two teams in the nation in the Student Sports Girls FAB 50, the Eagles ran up a 6-1 lead and never trailed against Vero Beach (9-1) before an announced 2,000 in the school's football stadium. The game was a rematch of last year's season opener, in which the Eagles had to come from behind to win, 12-6.

"Today we came out and played composed," Eagles coach Chris Robinson said. "They run a zone defense and we were really patient against that and built up a 6-1 lead. In the second half, they made a nice run at us and got within a couple of goals, but Megan Whittle scored a break-away goal and we were up three or four the rest of the way.

Whittle scored that goal with 16:35 left in the game for a 9-6 lead. The senior All-Metro attacker headed for Maryland led the Eagles, who have been ranked No. 1 in the country for four straight years, with five goals. Kelsey Cummings had two goals and an assist, and Elizabeth George had a goal and two assists.

Roland Park 8, No. 10 Bryn Mawr 7: Francesca Whitehurst had five points (four goals, one assist) as the host Reds (1-0) upset the Mawrtians (0-2).

Roland Park led 5-1 at the break.

No. 7 Severn 10, No. 11 John Carroll 3: The Admirals (1-0) held the host Patriots (0-1) to one goal in the second half.

Annie Igler led Severn with a hat trick.

St. Mary's 16, Mount de Sales 14: Tara Siefert scored six goals to lead the Saints (1-0) past the host Sailors (0-1).
