For the second straight season, No. 12 Notre Dame staged a furious second-half rally to upset No. 2 North Carolina, 11-10, in men's lacrosse Saturday.
The host Tar Heels twice held five-goal leads — at 7-2 midway through the second quarter and at 8-3 a minute into the second half. But Notre Dame responded with a run of five straight goals over a span of seven minutes to tie the game at 8 with 14:31 left.
After Jimmy Bitter put the Tar Heels back ahead with an unassisted goal at 13:09 in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame scored the next three goals, including the eventual game-winner by Sergio Perkovic on a man-up situation with 4:14 left in the game.
Kevin Brown led Penn with three goals.
No. 8 Virginia 17, No. 5 Syracuse 12: James Pannell scored seven goals to pace the host Cavaliers (6-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) past the Orange (2-2, 0-2).
Syracuse took a 3-0 lead before Virginia scored the next six straight.
No. 7 Yale 9, No. 20 Bryant 8: Yale (2-0), led by Conrad Oberbeck with three goals, survived a 3-1 run by host Bryant (2-2) in the fourth quarter.
No. 14 Drexel 18, Robert Morris 12: Cole Shafer had five goals and the host Dragons (2-2) never trailed the Colonials (1-2).
No. 18 Massachusetts 15, Brown 2: Nick Mariano had five goals to lead the Minutemen (4-0) past the host Bears (1-1).
No. 5 Florida 14, No. 13 Stony Brook 1: Shannon Gilroy had three goals and a program-high six assists as the Gators (5-1) beat the Seawolves (3-2).
No. 16 Virginia 12, No. 8 Penn State 11: Courtney Swan (two goals) scored the eventual game-winner with 3:37 left and the host Cavaliers (2-3) withstood a 3-0 run by the Nittany Lions (2-2).
Penn State's Madison Cyr (Winters Mill) scored the last two goals.
No. 10 Massachusetts 19, Iona 6: Sam Rush had four goals to lead the Minutewomen (5-0) past the host Gaels (0-3).
