Four Loyola Maryland men's lacrosse players win CAA awards

Loyola Maryland swept the Patriot League weekly awards, as Nikko Pontrello was named Offensive Player of the Week, Joe Fletcher the Defensive Player of the Week, Jack Runkel the Goalkeeper of the Week and Brian Sherlock the Rookie of the Week. The honors come after two victories in which the Greyhounds outscored Towson and Holy Cross by a combined 36-8. Pontrello matched his previous best of four goals on Wednesday in a 20-4 defeat of Towson, then eclipsed that mark with a six-goal effort Saturday in the Greyhounds' first-ever Patriot League game, a 16-4 win over Holy Cross. Fletcher and Runkel led a Greyhounds defense that shut out its opponent for a combined four quarters. Sherlock is the second Greyhounds player to earn Rookie of the Week honors this year. Sherlock, a redshirt freshman, scored twice in each of Loyola's wins last week and also had a pair of assists against Towson.

More: UMBC freshman attackman Max Maxwell was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week. He had three goals in a 10-8 win over Monmouth on Saturday.

Towson's Andi Raymond named CAA player of the week

Towson senior attacker Andi Raymond was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week. After missing the 2013 season because of injury, Raymond scored eight goals and dished out four assists as the Tigers downed UMBC and then-No. 10 Georgetown. Freshman attacker Gabby Cha (Mount de Sales) was also named Rookie of the Week after totaling three goals and one assist over the 2-0 week.

Division III: Franklin & Marshall senior Caroline Krohn (Towson) was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Benimon takes home CAA basketball weekly honor

Men's college basketball: Towson senior forward Jerrelle Benimon was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week. It's the third weekly award Benimon has received this season and seventh in the past two years. Benimon averaged 18.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 63.3 percent from the floor as Towson went 3-0 last week.

Women's college basketball: UMBC freshman forward Sara Tarbert picked up a program-record fifth America East Rookie of the Week honor and her second straight.Tarbert led the Retrievers in scoring at 16.5 points per game and averaged 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists during the week. … Coppin State senior forward Kyra Coleman was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

College baseball: Mount St. Mary's redshirt freshman Zach Hostetter was named the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week.  Hostetter hit .500 in helping lead the Mount to a 2-1 week to open the year. … McDaniel senior Andrew Monger (Mt. Hebron) was named the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week. Monger led the Green Terror to a 4-0 victory in the season opener at Marymount on Saturday. He struck out three, scattering four hits in five innings of shutout ball.

Youth soccer: Tryouts for the Baltimore Maccabi Club boys and girls soccer teams will take place noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. The Baltimore delegation will attend the Maccabi Games, to be held Aug. 10-15 in Cherry Hill, N.J. To be eligible, applicants must be between 13 and 16 years old by Aug. 1. All tryouts will take place at the Jewish Community Center's Owings Mills Campus on the upper athletic fields.
