Monday, Feb. 24: Martin Carter, a retired Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Laboratories Administration employee, who serves as first mate on Patent Pending out of Deale, will speak about three microscopic organisms infecting anglers on the Chesapeake Bay at the regular monthly meeting of the Perry Hall Chapter of Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Gunpowder VFW Post 10067, 6309 Ebenezer Road, Perry Hall. Fishing flea market

Saturday, March 1: Middle River Bass Club Anglers will hold a fishing flea market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Back River United Methodist Church at 544 Back River Neck Road in Essex/Middle River. Join the Bass Nation

March 4: The Pro-Formance Fishing Team, a member of the Maryland Bass Nation, is seeking additional members and will hold an introductory meeting at 6 p.m. at Italia's Corner Cafe in Ferndale. The club is primarily based in Glen Burnie and Annapolis but has membership throughout the region. The club is fishing 12 club tournaments this year and participates in MBN and other tournaments. It is seeking boaters but can accommodate a few riders, too. It welcomes new anglers who want to learn how to fish for bass competitively in a friendly environment. Hunter safety course

March 8: The Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association will conduct registration 9 a.m. to noon for a hunter safety course on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road in Carney. The course will be Wednesdays and Thursdays March 12, 13, 19 and 20 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with testing March 22 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Pickerel tournament

Through March 15: Anglers have the chance to keep their fishing skills sharp during the winter months through the third annual Coastal Conservation Association Maryland Catch and Release Pickerel Tournament. The fly and light-tackle tournament covers any tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. Fishermen can will be required to take photos of their catch against any standard ruler and submit those photos to a judging panel. Prizes will be awarded each month and for the total tournament based on inches of pickerel caught, with the top prizes being fishing rods. Registration costs $30. Endurance swim

May 10: TriColumbia will hold the inaugural Choptank Bridge Swim, a two-distance endurance open- water swim in the Choptank River, the largest river on the Delmarva Peninsula. The Cambridge event consists of a 1.6-mile swim and a 3.6-mile swim along the banks of the Choptank and between the Choptank River Bridge and the Choptank River Fishing Pier. Registration will be $60 until April 30, then $85 through May 9. Race-day registration, if still open, will be $85. For more information, go to TriColumbia.org or call 410-964-1246.

Paddleboard Fun Race

June 28: Paddle Second Chance will hold its second-annual Stand-Up Paddle day of fun racing and fundraising for Operation Second Chance, which serves wounded combat veterans and their families' recovery and transition back to active duty or into civilian life. The event will be at Holts Landing State Park in Millville, Del. For information, go to paddlesecondchance.com.

Charles Street 12

Aug. 9: The point-to-point running race takes runners down Charles Street, now a National Scenic Byway, from the shops at Kenilworth in Towson to Power Plant Live in Baltimore. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Children's Heart Program at the University of Maryland Children's Hospital. Register at charlesst12.com.
