Aquille Carr's NBA Development League journey has come to an end, at least for now.
The Delaware 87ers on Friday released the former Patterson star, known in Baltimore as the "Crimestopper" for his must-see athletic feats.
Brandon Williams, the 87ers' general manager, said the team placed Carr on waivers and that other D-League teams had 48 hours to claim the 20-year-old point guard.
"He's got some incredible gifts and talents," Williams said. "There's a lot he's going through privately. … It's less about his game or him being a bad kid."
Williams said it would be "inappropriate" for the team to speak for Carr, but indicated that personal matters and a difficulty adjusting to the professional game contributed to the former two-time All-Metro Player of the Year's release.
"You've got to be available all the time," Williams said. "Somewhere in there, there were matters that made Aquille less available than we would like."
Carr could not be reached for comment immediately Friday. His agent did not respond to a telephone message seeking comment.
In response to another Twitter user, Carr wrote on Friday that he's "always got a back up plan."
Carr had not played in a game for the 87ers since Dec. 15 vs. Fort Wayne, when the 5-foot-6, 148-pound guard missed all six of his field-goal attempts and played just eight minutes, going 1-for-2 from the free-throw line with two assists, one turnover and one rebound.
Three days earlier, Carr scored 22 points for the second consecutive game in a 115-88 loss to the Idaho Stampede. He also scored 22 points in a 127-108 loss to the Stampede on Dec. 11.
"Just walking out on the court and knowing that you're under an NBA team, it's just like what I dreamed about," Carr told The Baltimore Sun last month. "I mean, I didn't dream about being in the NBA D-League, but it's close enough. I know it's going to help me get to the NBA. I'm on the right road now."
In November, Carr was selected by the 87ers — the D-League affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers — with the ninth pick of the third round in the 2013 NBA Development League Draft. He appeared in 10 games with the team and averaged 10.7 points, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 13.8 minutes per game.
Williams said Carr would have the opportunity to latch on with another D-League team, perhaps even the 87ers.
"It's not a, 'No forever,'" he said. "It's a, 'Not a right fit right now.'"
