One state high school football passing record held by four local quarterbacks has fallen and another has likely been eclipsed – both in the last nine days.
Rockville quarterback Chuck Reese threw eight touchdowns last Friday in a 64-41 win over Margruder, breaking the record of seven held by five players, including three from Carroll County.
Westminster's Duke Etchison turned in the most recent seven-touchdown performance in a 51-22 win over Francis Scott Key on Oct.18.
Last season, the Owls' Deryk Kern, The Baltimore Sun's Offensive Player of the Year, threw seven touchdowns twice. Century's Ryan Throndset threw seven in 2010 and Arundel's Billy Cosh did it in 2009. Kennedy's Melvin Harris set that state record in 2006.
Friday night, the record for most passing yards in a game may have fallen, although it has yet to be confirmed. The Gazette reported that Wootton quarterback Sam Ellis threw for 547 yards on 22-for-36 passing in a 58-40 win over Rockville. If that yardage is confirmed by Sheldon Shealer, who keeps the state records for the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, it would break another of Cosh's records.
Cosh, co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2009, threw for 475 yards in a 59-34 loss to Linganore in the 2008 state semifinals.
