Boys soccer roundup: Gilman upsets No. 6 Curley

Brendan Barger scored the tying and winning goals and No. 10 Gilman upset No. 6 Archbishop Curley, 2-1, in overtime in boys soccer Wednesday.

The visiting Greyhounds improved to 8-6-2 and 6-2 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference. The Friars fell to 10-8, 7-7.

Curley took a 1-0 lead 1:30 into the game before Barger scored his first, from 30 yards out at the 30-minute mark of the second half to force extra time.

Four minutes into the overtime, Sam Wancowicz crossed the ball from the left to Barger, who headed in the ball.

"Both teams had chances to score in the second half," Gilman coach Jon Seal said. "But we played better in the second half with the wind in our face. And Barger's first goal gave us a lot of motivation."

No. 1 McDonogh 4, Calvert Hall 0: George Campbell and Connor Smith each scored twice and Calvin Livingston made three saves for his 12th shutout for the visiting Eagles (17-0, 13-0 MIAA A Conference).

The Cardinals fell to 4-11, 2-10. McDonogh is three games away from a perfect season: Friday, vs. No. 6 Archbishop Curley at 4 p.m.; Monday at St. Paul's, 4 p.m.; and Oct. 30 vs. John Carroll at 4 p.m.

John Carroll 1, No. 15 Mount St. Joseph 0: The host Patriots (9-9-2, 5-8-1 MIAA A Conference) scored with 20 minutes left in the game off a corner kick. Guillermo Almirall crossed the ball into the box, where Ryan Balzaus finished to upset the Gaels (6-9-2, 4-9-10).

Gerstell Academy 2, St. Mary's 0: Ben Higgins gave the visiting Falcons (13-4, 8-4 MIAA B Conference) a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game, and Nick Wilson added an insurance goal 15 minutes later.

The Saints fell to 6-11, 5-7.
