During the school year, Varsity Letters will periodically ask student-athletes from various sports to step in as guest bloggers. They will share their personal thoughts during pivotal stretches of a given season.
This week's guest is James Canoles, a senior captain and forward on the Perry Hall boys soccer team. James saw his senior season cut short after suffering a knee injury earlier this month that will require surgery. The No. 9 Gators are 9-2 and he remains a big part of the team.
Here's what James wrote Wednesday night:
Two weeks ago I tore my ACL, and my senior year of soccer came to an end. When the doctor gave me the news that I tore my ACL my whole world came crashing down on me. All I wanted to do was sit and cry and think how this could happen to me. The next day, as I was watching my team practice, I realized there's nothing I can do to change what happened and that I need to put the work and effort in now to ensure a quick and full recovery. Even though physically I can not be on the field playing the game I love, I am always being a part of what’s going on. During games, you can hear me screaming and cheering for my teammates as we score or telling someone to make a run. Also, I'm at every practice trying to give advice and help my team in any and every way possible. It kills me not being able to go out there and play on the field, and I'd give anything for just one more game with my team. The team is one big family, my teammates are supporting me all the way through recovery as I support them through the rest of this season. One of the biggest supporters besides my loving parents is Coach Pete Eibner. Coach Pete has been with me since the injury occurred, and told me things happen for a reason and that he knows I will be fine. I will overcome this injury and I plan to play college soccer. But first, I need to start my therapy now to get better before surgery. After surgery, I will have six months of intense therapy and training to get me ready for spring ball and college. I love my team and without them my recovery would be much harder. Thanks to their support, I will overcome this obstacle.
